In Seattle, so far it seems more streamlined. Samantha Holloway, the owner of the Kraken, is the only known bidder in the Pacific Northwest. She has stated publicly she wants to bring the Sonics back, has an arena ready to go and has been preparing for the endeavor by putting her team and the arena under One Roof Sports and Entertainment. Another bidding group, led by the New York-based BlackSun Private Equity and partnering with the Tulalip Tribes, has emerged, but it’s harder to assess their viability. Their proposed arena site would be tough to get to from downtown Seattle.

Today in old Facebook posts, something I wrote after witnessing the 101st loss of the Mariners' season.

Today I attended the 101st loss of the Mariners' season. Like many of their losses this year, it was boring. Nothing much interesting happened. Ichiro had a couple of meaningless hits in a game otherwise devoid of any offensive threat from the home team. An entirely forgettable stable of pitches took the mound, to pitch ineffectually and without fanfare.
I went to my first Mariners game in 1982, when I was in second grade. Aside from 1995, when I was in college and too distracted by other things to pay attention, and 2001, which was a surreal year on so many levels, each year of my Mariner fandom has ended in disappointment. And even '95 and '01 were disappointments of their own sort -- after all, the Mariners ended up losing, just a little later in the year than usual.
To make matters worse, the disappointment I've felt hasn't even been like Red Sox disappointment. There has been no curse. The level of losing hasn't been epic and enduring, due to the franchise being born in the '70s, as I was. So while my entire life as a Mariner fan has seen nothing but failure, it's not a heroic failure. It's a banal series of not really important failures. And that's kind of the worst type of failure, isn't it? Boring failure.
So maybe it's time for a break from giving a shit about baseball. The Mariners will not be good next year. They won't spend on any big-name free agent.
There is no saying, "Next year will be better." Because it won't be.
