Gonna get this in before the Brewers take the lead: I’m not a huge baseball fan. A big part of it is I’m a Wisconsin boy married to a White Sox family. I casually follow both teams, but I have never expected them to be contenders. This is the first year I believe one of them is gonna win it all!

I think a lot the “5 things people need to feel grounded” lecture from an intro to cultural anthropology class I took. One of them are shared places. Think of an old oak tree that kid can climb, that his grandparent can share stories about climbing when they were a kid.

Yeah and a lot of the "white rural voters" people are trying to court, aren't even. They're exurbanites with a city job, a long commute, & a "farm" that mostly functions as a tax shelter. They might "feel" rural. But have no real skin in the rural economy, beyond driving up the price of land.

Detroit vs Michigan is up there but I think it's actually Milwaukee vs Wisconsin. Again might be biased cause I was raised in Madison and moved to Milwaukee as an adult. But Detroit is large enough that it still has sway in state politics. Milwaukee is small enough that they are completely ignored.

When my film history 101 professor came to BOAN he instead showed us Rebirth of a Nation from the experimental hip hop artist DJ Spooky. He used VJ techniques to make what we would now call a video essay. It showcased how the new film techniques of BOAN were used to support its racism.
