New quote on this story:
Lopa Leach, UCU branch president and professor of vascular biology told Research Professional News that curiosity-driven research to generate fundamental knowledge had been “acknowledged as important” by administrators, but that research time on university-funded research was still being reduced to 25 per cent under the plans.

“I fear our colleagues will have very little time to generate fundamental discovery-lead research that leads to the major breakthroughs in science and knowledge advance,” Leach said. “Sadly, many top researchers are also planning to leave as they fear this is not a place their research can thrive and grow. I hope I am proven wrong.”

Cambridge academics say university’s plans to investigate Jason Arday’s death are inadequate
Letter signed by more than 40 signatories say Cambridge has backed away from promised thorough review of events before Arday’s death Senior Cambridge academics have criticised the university’s plans to investigate Prof Jason Arday’s death as inadequate, and said those responsible for “serious failures of leadership” should face consequences. In a letter to Chris Smith, Cambridge’s chancellor, the academics said “it is not yet clear” how the proposed review will answer difficult questions about the university’s involvement in the events leading up to Arday’s death, including its handling of the criticism Arday suffered after his appointment as professor of sociology of education in 2023. With two days of strike action under our belts, we now begin over two months of continuous in response to our university's gross financial negligence. Shout out to Notts Solidarity Group for the slides! And @tregenza.bsky.social for the original photos.
67 days of industrial action against course closures and job lossesWhy are staff striking?

The University of Nottingham identified a £30 million deficit after wasting £80 million pounds on consultants and vanity projects such as the
‘Castle Meadow’ Campus, which is now unsellable.

Over 3900 staff received notice of risk of redundancy, with 258 administrative
/ professional services roles to be made redundant.

UCU argues that there is now no financial justification for compulsory redundancies.

Student recruitment has been strong, voluntary redundancy has increased, staff have submitted extensive alternative proposals capable of delivering further savings and the university itself is saying it now has a surplus.

Management have refused to rule out further compulsary redundancies and are intent on making students and staff pay for their mistakes by closing courses vital for the East Midlands. When are staff striking?

Staff at the University of Nottingham Started striking on 30th September and 1st October, as the University’s governing Council met to finalize restructuring plans.

The two-day strike is now followed by sustained strike Action from 5th October TO 11th December.

Support the UCU: email the vice chancellor to tell her what you think of her plans. and Please consider making a donation if you are able. The Local Branch Hardship Fund is maintained to help strikers who will suffer significant hardship from loss of pay due to striking. No More Course Cuts

A really important factor in Home Office-calculated stop and search disproportionality is that the Census denominator is only updated every 10 years. GMP illustrates the impact of this demographic drag: a sharp step down when the denominator switched from 2011 to 2021.
