One of the key messages I carry is that we don't have to accept any of this. Sometimes I see opposition in the form of "Get in loser, you'll be left behind" and other times it's in the form of "It's all over the place, what do you mean you think you can opt out?" >>

And remember, all of this is happening amid the AI buildout. AI, which is not a coherent set of products and services, but rather a commercial and political project, can be understood as a full-spectrum class-war offensive. An offensive waged by one industry, which put their guy Vance in the WH.

Black text on white page that reads:

In 1882, 10,000 workers marched up Broadway in the first-ever Labor Day parade. Led by democratic socialists and organized by New York’s unions, they rallied the movement that went on to win us weekends, safety standards, overtime pay, a minimum wage, and social security.

None of those victories were guaranteed. And none are permanent.

We created the first-in-the-nation Office of Worker Power to put the full weight of City Hall behind the people who keep New York running. On Labor Day, we honor the workers who came before us by fighting for the workers who come next.

Happy Labor Day, New York. The future of worker power is ours to build. Learn more at nyc.gov/workerpower.

I'm not going to be relitigating COVID lockdowns or mask mandates. Both were necessary measures that saved lives. If you cannot accept the curtailing of even the minor of freedoms in the name of public safety, you have demonstrated that you do not give a solitary fuck about the rest of us.

“He’s unwell,” “he doesn’t belong near power” are as beside the point as “he shouldn’t be allowed to do this.” They’re callbacks to an order that’s been broken. We know fascism is wrong. We must after 10 years move past the part where we keep rediscovering it daily with new shock.

The Netflix miniseries Death By Lightning turns a historical footnote — Charles Guiteau's assassination of President James Garfield — into a grand entertainment, with wonderful performances by Matthew Macfadyen, Michael Shannon, Betty Gilpin, and, especially, Nick Offerman. My review:

Smart people are asking questions about societal upheavals. Unless you have a plan to transition proverbial "saddle makers" into "car upholstery" makers, wiping out a majority of your employment opportunities in a society where human value is predicated on work, will lead to catastrophe.

9. If you use Al to write something for you, it is meaningless and we'd all be better off if you had never said anything in the first place.

This is the thing: Writing is meaning. The reason we write things is to express some sort of meaning, to pass along important information, to convey a human emotion or sensation. It doesn't matter whether the writing is grammatically correct, or vividly expressed. It matters that it came from you. That is the point of writing. If you ask a Chatbot to write something for you, you are being fundamentally unhuman and foundationally dishonest. I am not going to bend on this one. If it requires an Al bot for you to express something to me, you and I are probably not actually friends.

Unless they run it the same way they run charter schools and have taxpayers pay them. Only now, we’re not just paying for the service, we have to pay for their profit too. There is no magical efficiency in the private sector. When they do find efficiency, it goes to profit, not price reduction.

Americans have really got to unlearn the propagandist indoctrination that socialism is bad. It means that everyone has what they need, resources are shared, and we care for the earth & those around us. We've been taught to hate it so capitalists can keep exploiting us and working us to death.
