Happy to share our new article on academic freedom. @paulita.bsky.social, Christiane Thompson and Gregor Fabian examine how academic rank shapes experiences, expectations and perceptions of restrictions on academic freedom, based on a survey of 9.083 academics in Germany. doi.org/10.1111/1468...
Screenshot showing abstract: This article investigates the relationship between academic career ranks and restrictions on academic freedom. Drawing on a representative survey of 9083 full-time academics at German higher education institutions, we examine how academics across different career ranks assess their freedom in teaching and research. Although precarious employment conditions and professional hierarchies may suggest otherwise, our findings show that doctoral candidates and postdocs on fixed-term contracts do not report experiencing restrictions on their academic freedom significantly more often compared to tenured professors. However, distinguishing between experienced restrictions, on the one hand, and expectations of restrictions as well as broader perceptions of academic freedom on the other, we find that non-tenured academics report more often to expect or perceive their academic freedom to be restricted compared to professors. We explain these rank-based differences with a chilling effect generated by a polemical and polarized discourse on ‘cancel culture.’ Academics on fixed-term contracts are more likely to be receptive to often polemical debates on ‘cancel culture’ and for the concerns that come with it. This suggests that structural employment insecurity plays a key role in shaping how academics assess their academic freedom. Our results challenge simplified accounts of ‘cancel culture’ by showing that discourse and institutional hierarchies intersect to produce differentiated vulnerabilities within academia. Although based in Germany, the findings speak to broader international concerns about restrictions on academic freedom and precarious academic labour.

Here's a red flag that the "Semitic influence" explanation for NT Greek usage isn't all it's cracked up to be. If the so-called Semitic influence must, in the same sentence, be said to also strengthen existing Greek usage, it isn't Semitic influence. It's just regular Greek usage. #biblicalgreek

Forthcoming: Greek Prepositions in the New Testament: A Semantic Description
We are excited to see that our forthcoming book, Greek Prepositions in the New Testament: A Semantic Description, is officially listed: Baker Publishing Group Amazon Logos Bible Software We are in the midst of the laborious process of reviewing galleys right now, but hope to see proofs in the coming months. Originally, the hope had been that the book would be available this fall in time for conferences, but we took some extra time this past January to add visual figures and image schemas for each preposition article with the hope of improving its usefulness for students.

Doing a read through of Carl Bache's The Study of Aspect, Tense, and Action for maybe the first time in 12 years+ and I had forgotten just how good it is. Also: only now remembering that Bache literally gave me a copy and signed it. Also, also: my computer's webcam is crap.

Adding a “How To Use The Library” scavenger-hunt assignment to my intro to Roman culture class was the single best addition to my pedagogical practice last year. Am now creating versions for basically all my classes moving forward. Also, the students LOVED it.

I’m not saying genetic material can’t add to our understanding of the past but, seriously, journalists and scientists need to stop framing this stuff as if historians haven’t been asking and researching these questions for literally hundreds of years.

Tell me you haven't read "The Boy Who Cried 'Wolf'" without telling me you haven't read "The Boy Who Cried 'Wolf'".
Linked post from Jay Owen, CEO, that says:

I’m starting to feel like the boy who cried wolf about AI.

But this is not a false alarm.

If you’re a white collar knowledge worker of any kind and you’re not spending at least an hour a day experimenting with AI tools… your job is at risk.

That’s not exaggeration. That’s math.

Most people are still playing with free versions of tools from a year ago. Most people still think AI is the thing that draws hands with six fingers.

Meanwhile, AI is writing its own code to improve itself. The best software engineers on the planet are saying this openly.

I’m not warning you because I want to scare you. I’m warning you because I want to help.

Right now is both the greatest opportunity and the greatest danger most of us will face in our careers. In our finances. In our livelihoods.

There have always been moments in history where someone pointed to the horizon and said “a storm is coming.” This is that moment.

But here’s the thing about storms. The people who prepare don’t just survive them. They lead through them.

You still have time. But the window is closing faster than most people realize.

What are you doing today to prepare?
