"Trump’s authoritarian assault on our democracy has made the prospect of states prosecuting federal law enforcement officers to protect their residents from grave civil rights violations appear not only potentially appropriate, but possibly essential." — @davidrlurie.bsky.social

Just because Pam Bondi won't hold Trump's thugs accountable doesn't mean they're above all laws.

There's a popular trope used as a reposte to the Palestinian desire to return that expelled Jews "get over it", have no desire to return to former homes, etc. Last month gave a deeply moving rejoinder to that: Rabbi Yusuf Hamra being overcome with joy at finally being able to go home to Damascus.

Thousands of Jews left Syria in 1992, when they were allowed to emigrate. The visit by a small delegation of U.S.-based Syrian Jewish religious figures last week was their first time back since then.

Thus the target is also not 'dead'. It will be eventually breached (likely already in the decade ahead), but even then will remain an important yardstick (h/t @costasamaras.com) as the level that we should aim to come back to, which means we should do all we can to peak as low as possible 4/5
Costa Samaras, an environmental-engineering professor at Carnegie Mellon University, compared the warming goals to health officials’ guidelines on, say, cholesterol. “We don’t set health targets on what’s realistic or what’s possible,” Dr. Samaras said. “We say, ‘This is what’s good for you. This is how you’re going to not get sick.’”

“If we were going to say, ‘Well, 1.5 is likely out of the question, let’s put it to 1.75,’ it gives people a false sense of assurance that 1.5 was not that important,” said Dr. Samaras

It is important to note that a single year above 1.5C does not imply that the Paris Agreement target is breached, as in terms of multi-year average warming we are currently at 1.2-1.4C. For details, see bsky.app/profile/joer... and bsky.app/profile/kath... 3/5
