How many degrees of separation are there between Van Damme and Prince Shōtoku? My new article open access article explores how the ancient Japanese prince became a ninja ancestor, in a story spanning figures from prewar mind-cure movements and bubble-era tokusatsu actors. doi.org/10.1080/1869...

Transcribing Meiji-era politicians into a list sucks when you realize that no, what you were trying to input was Saionji Kinmochi's 1st term as education minister under the 2nd Itō admin, but you accidentally jumped to the 2nd Saionji term under the 3rd Itō admin, so your order is borked.

I know this isn’t useful but it’s weird how “the president should be coherent” was a Very Important Thing just a few years ago and then suddenly wasn’t.

You know that DoorDash commercial where Jameis Winston tries to steal the crab legs would be a lot funnier if he also wasn't, you know, a rapist.

the NEH is a ghost of an organization. the NEA's budget is $29 million. I'm not saying this to be pissy, but simply to say that when we rebuild - and we will rebuild - I expect solidarity from my STEM colleagues as we robustly expand research in the arts and humanities as well.

We are now, without a doubt, the greatest kleptocracy the world has ever known. By virtue of Donald Trump and the Republican Party promising to hate and abuse those people a nation of angry rubes wants to hate and abuse, they have lifted the national wallet and handed it back to the rubes, empty.

15-20 years ago, ESPN ran an online contest on college football--best mascot or something. Some student at Stanford decided to write a bot script to stuff the online ballot box but over did it and gave them so many votes it was obvious tampering. These are the people who control our internet now.

Don't worry, if this goes in, Narduzzi will just blame the loss on the fact that Notre Dame isn't a full ACC member.

I find Frames Janklin to be generally annoying and he was easy to root against while at Penn State, but he's not hate-inducing, particularly at VT. He's fun to laugh at when he Franklin's. Narduzzi is a hateable dipshit and I will giggle when his team blows this.

Cool book find today. For a museum library I tend, I got a copy of the first US intelligence manual, the 1893 "Service of Security and Information" by Arthur Wagner. The copy turned out to have belonged to M. W. Day, a white officer who spent most of his career w/the 9th Cavalry (Buffalo Soldiers).

This is obviously disgusting in so many ways. Gonna highlight one: Servicemember beard exemptions are all on religious or medical grounds. They're either Sikhs (mostly South Asian) or have a skin condition related to shaving curly hair (mostly African American). "No beardos" is racist as hell.

Oh, you mean it fairly compensates artists while providing distribution of their work? "No" Oh...so it must at least separate that distribution from the platforms owned and operated by corporate fascists, then? "No, not that either..." Hmm...what problem is it solving then? "Oh...you know..."

Small numbers of minorities who "know their place" is tolerable, if not ideal, for them. White supremacists freak out most when they feel like they are close to becoming the minority--mostly because they expect that other groups will treat them as badly as they treat minorities.

Sure, totally makes sense for me to spend 4 hours making a chart tracking the placement of Meiji Genrō in government minister positions for a slide my students will glance at for 30 seconds, 100% worth it.

Juuust prepping for tomorrow's lecture portion covering the Russo-Japanese War. Found this interesting, no other reason at all. Nope. None.
"I have said often that international wars may benefit only a small number of people, but they disturb the peace, prevent progress, and create a host of miseries for the common people. It has come to pass in this manner because there were ambitions politicians who advocated war, which was pleasing to soldiers anxious for their war decorations. Sly war profiteers praised the war, and many reporters gave their full support by failing to give the truth in their writing. They competed with one another to incite and urge the simple-minded common people to support the war. Behold, generals may proclaim their battle victories, but the people do not receive one extra grain of rice. Our military might may be known throughout the world, but our people do not get one extra suit of clothing. Many of our fellow countrymen are exposed to the dangers of the battlefields, and the familes they left behind cry because of hunger. Our commerce and industry have to retrench, prices go up, laborers lose their jobs, and minor officials have their salaries cut. Yet we are forced to subscribe to the military bonds and to make contributions from our savings. To this end we pay an excessive amount of burdensome taxes, which injures very deeply the livelihood of the poor...when we think of these little things, we question the wisdom of having a state, a government, or taxes."

--Kōtoku Shūsui, Japanese anarchist, in Shūkan Heimin Shinbun no. 20, March 27, 1904.

👇🎯 If you send kids the message that the only majors that are good are business & STEM from the time they’re in middle school, & then you don’t find the humanities & social sciences at the college level, it all becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy & that was clearly the point in the first place.

NBC just showed a stat that Oregon was #3 in the nation with 37 (or so) games won in a row while leading at half (they just went into the half up 13-10). Michigan was #1 at 47. Notre Dame second at 41. Michigan was up 10-7 and lost 20-19 today to Iowa. Which means there's a new streak leader.
