This cartoon was drawn 8 years ago. It seems the right time for it to be reshared. (✍️ Carlos Latuff)
The cartoon depict Trump as a tank being driven by Netanyahu towards Iran. War criminal Netanyahu is seen with a grin standing out of the top of Trump’s hair, through a tank hatch. The Israeli flag flies on top of Trump’s head and he has just run over and crushed a copy of the Iran Nuclear Deal. The whole cartoon suggests felon Trump is steered entirely by Netanyahu.

Doris Lessing, from Memoirs of a Survivor.
“Yes, it was extraordinary . Yes, it was all impossible. But, after all, I had accepted the "impossible." I lived with it. I had
abandoned all expectations of the ordinary for my inner world, my real life in that place. And as for the public, the outer
world, it had been a long time since that offered the normal. Could one perhaps describe that period as "the ordinariness of the extraordinary”? Well, the reader should have no difficulty here: these words are a description of the times we have lived
through. (A description of all life?-- probably, but it is not much help to think so.)
….While everything, all forms of social organization, broke up, we lived on, as if nothing fundamental was happening. It was amazing how determined, how stubborn, how self-renewing were the attempts to lead an ordinary life. When nothing, or very little, was left of what we had been used to, had taken for granted even ten years before, we went on talking and behaving as if those old forms were still ours.” Doris Lessing, The Memoirs of a Survivor

What is Close Reading?
By transforming quotations into evidence, close reading served as way to transform postwar criticism into a specialized knowledge. But what if we treated it more as an art form?

I first interviewed Alan Moore in 2009, and one of the things he said then has reverberated in my head louder and louder over the last ten years. He was reading the entrails of the 20th century long before the shit hit the fan.
“As our information increases so does our complexity”, he says, “And once it passes this tipping point then you don’t get one super-computer ruling the world, you just get chaos. Eventually you’ll find a lot of systems shaking themselves to pieces because they’re not flexible enough to deal with this level of turbulence. It’s already leading us to reconsider the way we organise our markets, our philosophies, our politics. The ideas that have got us through the 19th and 20th centuries are completely outdated.”

oh my god
At one point, Cunningham
triumphantly declares that he's "starting new
pages in the recipe niche" and wants "to
disrupt that whole industry" because, in his
telling, it's "ripe for the taking."
"Going back to the AI recipes, do you know if
they actually work?" someone asks
Cunningham later in the clip.
"Of course they work. ChatGPT told me they
work," Cunningham, who looks genuinely
baffled by the question, responds. "What kind
of question is that?"

When I discuss AI with my composition classes, I try to emphasize the importance of voice and how AI erodes it. We spend time comparing student drafts and AI "polished" versions and how all the interesting and idiosyncratic parts are smoothed into a bland, generic sameness. AI writing is boring.

This is often true in the humanities in higher ed, too. Why aren't working class concerns reflected? Bc to become a successful academic, you typically need financial stability...or luck. In the comments, people in other fields (journalism, research science) say much the same.

Two yearling goats - one brown, one black with white spots - are standing on upright tires painted blue and aqua. A third orange tire is nearby but without a goat. There are trees in the background and the grass is a lush spring green.

Great piece on DOGE's violations of the privacy act in its compilation of a "database of ruin" that provides the foundation for "turnkey totalitarianism." (The wit of the neologisms contrasts sharply with how they make my skin crawl.)

If we consider Trump’s base through the lens of cult psychology, his rhetoric may hit differently, and it seems less likely that they abandon him due to empty shelves, and a bit more likely they double down through their own sacrifice while waiting for the next promised salvation.
