Ezra Klein asked Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang about AI making kids worse at math and reading. Huang’s reply: “Does it matter?” Then he said he doesn’t know his own address or phone number. “We’re going to lose some fine intellectual dexterity.” www.nytimes.com/2026/09/23/o...
So the message of this research out of China, where you were seeing a lot of kids using A.I. to help them, was that when they were using the A.I., they were getting things done faster. But it turned out that the skills they were learning were not holding, that their actual personal performance, at least in the way we traditionally measure it, was degrading.

What do you think when you hear that?

The last part — I completely agree. Try to get a kid to do long division right now. The multiplication table is starting to be forgotten. Doing square roots, my goodness. Basic math is being forgotten. Does it matter?

That’s my question for you.

Yeah. I don’t think it does. I don’t think it does.

But there must be some set of skills that matter.

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. But maybe not those. We’re going to discover new ones. Just maybe not those.

There are a lot of skills that don’t matter. My first confession, I actually don’t know my address. And I ——

I don’t really believe that to be true.

It’s completely true. Janine will tell you and Lori will tell you.

One day I had to pump gas — it was a few years ago. They needed my ZIP code, and I panicked. I didn’t know my ZIP code. I don’t know my telephone number. I forget these things. I can live with it.

But let me take the other side because I don’t want to fall into a thing where, because some skills can be safely offloaded ——

Yeah.

I also can’t get anywhere without a mapping system now. Never could, frankly. But I’m a big reader. And one of the skills I really value, one of the capacities I have that I really value is an attention span formed on physical books.

You’re a big reader. I’ve read about the kind of reading you do. And there is, prior to A.I., a lot of concern and noticing among college professors and others that the way people use the internet has probably shortened attention spans.
Some skills can be safely given away. Others are valuable. They are capacities that are needed for that flexibility, for that creative thinking, for that focus. It can’t be the case that everything can be traded off. Some skills can be safely given away. Others are valuable. They are capacities that are needed for that flexibility, for that creative thinking, for that focus. It can’t be the case that everything can be traded off.

Yeah. Well, I think that we’re going to lose some finer intellectual dexterity, but we’re going to be better systems thinkers.

Today’s engineers are far better systems thinkers than I was when I graduated from school. But I was a much better transistor thinker.

What do you mean by systems thinker?

They think of large systems. Today’s computers have trillions, hundreds of trillions of transistors in them. When I first graduated from school, the first chip I worked on had 200 transistors. I knew every one of them by name. No engineer does that today. Most engineers now work well above the transistor, well above the functionality, and they’re cobbling things together to do things.

So you need to think much more about systems and interactions of systems. So some of the lower-level knowledge is gone.

These tests are not always designed to select the most intelligent of applicants; for in a certain Continental factory the management admit that they use intelligence tests to eliminate the alert and intelligent among the applicants, because the work is so sub divided and mechanised that its monotony has the effect of turning intelligent workers into Communists."

How many lives are upended, how many careers are cut short, because of men who want to abuse power for their own (sexual) gratification?
She met with her adviser to determine if she could complete the Ph.D. program without research funding from Scheufele and Brossard. Her adviser said it would be difficult.

“He (Scheufele) had the funding. He and Dominique (Brossard) were the only people that had this large amount of money,” the student said.

She transferred to another UW-Madison department in August 2024 after informing her adviser about her concerns with Scheufele. Her adviser then reported the conversation to the university’s Title IX office, which investigates harassment and discrimination. She did not complete her doctorate.

So basically, any actual advising and support was totally contingent on students’ sexual availability. Got it.
A semester after the student who attended the Detroit conference spoke with Brossard, another student in the department began exploring options for quitting the program.

The second student told investigators she began pursuing a doctorate degree at Scheufele’s encouragement after completing her master’s in 2022, and they met weekly. After she mentioned having a romantic partner and decided to stop meeting with Scheufele, he began treating her negatively, she told investigators. She said Scheufele criticized and interrupted her in meetings and rolled his eyes when she spoke, university records show.

While traveling to a spring 2024 conference in Mexico, she learned from another student about Schuefele’s sexual and romantic relationships with students and with Brossard, university records show. That was the “final straw” in working for Scheufele and Brossard, she told the Cap Times.

“It suddenly became crystal clear that it … was such a part of our departmental culture that that was implicit,” she said in an interview.

…Chaser.
Investigators found no evidence to suggest Brossard notified university officials of Scheufele’s reported relationships under mandatory reporting obligations. Brossard told investigators she asked the student if she wanted to file a complaint and spoke with Scheufele, who denied the allegations.

Brossard said in her interview with investigators that she did not pursue the matter further because the complainant was no longer a student and had left the university as a staff member. UW-Madison officials did not respond to questions about Brossard’s response to the allegations.

Investigators wrote that Schefuele’s “mocking and disparaging of students and faculty that he deemed incompetent or unfavorable” created a sense in the department that if he did not like a student, they might face professional struggles.

Brossard “contributed to this dynamic because of her close relationship with (Scheufele) and willingness to protect him,” investigators wrote. Brossard and Schefuele once had a romantic and sexual relationship in the early 2000s, while he was a professor and she was a postdoctoral researcher at Cornell University, investigators found.

Shot…
‘Part of our departmental culture’
After she graduated in 2023, the woman who attended the Detroit conference secured a salaried research position within the Life Sciences Communication department for that fall. By December, she realized she had to resign because she could not continue working with Scheufele, she told the Cap Times.

Leading up to her decision, the student recalled, she felt increasingly compelled to report her interactions with Scheufele.

“Who knows how many students this has happened to?” she told the Cap Times.

She notified the department’s chair, Dominique Brossard, about her resignation and left the role in early 2024. The student told Brossard that Scheufele had romantic relationships with female students, including herself, and she was fed up with the department’s “dysfunctional culture” and “power abuses,” according to the university's final investigative report.

Sigh.
Scheufele told investigators any negative assessments he had of Monroe were purely related to her academic potential. Investigators found Scheufele’s negative opinions about Monroe’s appearance and sexuality likely influenced his willingness to support and advocate for her the same way he did for graduate students he found attractive.

Investigators could not conclude with sufficient evidence that his conduct toward her would have been different without the bias he had toward her, though.

Hey Arizona State grad students, this is what you’re getting as an advisor. That is, if he doesn’t want to fuck you.
Monroe said she selected UW-Madison for graduate school because of its high regard in the field of science communication. Scheufele became her assigned adviser as a master’s student in fall 2017.

“I named him as one of the people who was doing the type of work that was really interesting to me in my application,” she told the Cap Times.

However, Monroe said, she struggled to reach him over email, have meetings and get his feedback, including for her master’s thesis. After reviewing emails between Scheufele and Monroe, university investigators found he had an irritated tone and suggested she get help from other faculty.

“It became clear to me that he didn't like me that much during that period of time, and I didn't understand fully why,” Monroe said. “I was struggling with making connections with other people (in the department) and understanding how funding and networking and getting onto projects worked.”

Investigators found at one research group meeting, Scheufele harshly criticized Monroe after a presentation — telling her she was lazy and saying she’d never get a job.

The student recalled Scheufele criticizing students and colleagues to her. Investigators reviewed hundreds of text messages between the student and Scheufele. Investigators wrote that Scheufele repeatedly mocked Monroe’s physical appearance to the student who attended the Detroit conference.

After the student told Scheufele she was interested in collaborating with Monroe, Scheufele “commented that (Monroe) was not smart” and he didn’t want to spend his workday “looking at a fat lesbian’s mustache,” investigators wrote.

Investigators wrote Scheufele “consistently made sarcastic, derogatory comments” to the first student about her gender — particularly related to female intelligence, emotionality and the student’s choice to become a parent.

Yet the university doesn’t think “I won’t be your advisor if I can’t fuck you anymore” counts as a quid-pro-quo.
The student said she didn’t report Scheufele to university officials after the conference because she was focused on trying to graduate and would need his support as her adviser to complete her degree.

“Now all of a sudden, I have this ludicrous ambition to finish this program as soon as possible,” she said in an interview.

The student told investigators that after the Detroit conference, some of her interactions with Scheufele were noticeably strained. He suggested she switch advisers, something the student perceived as a threat, investigators found. Changing advisers would have delayed her graduation schedule.

“She didn’t report her sexual relationship with Scheufele because she feared retaliation from him.”
After reviewing text messages, investigators wrote the student’s obligation to stay in Scheufele’s favor was shaped, in part, by his repeated mentions of loyalty to her before and after their relationship. The relationship ended in 2021 after the student began to suspect Scheufele might be involved with her friend, another doctoral student in the program.

“I was like, ‘Oh, no, is this something he does?’” she told the Cap Times.

University investigators interviewed the friend as a witness in their probe, and the friend said she didn’t report her sexual relationship with Scheufele because she feared retaliation from him. The Cap Times isn’t naming the friend because she isn’t identified in the investigation documents.

As “consensual” as a relationship may be at the outset, there is an inherent power imbalance between a faculty member and a student, particularly an advisor and senior professor with influence over funding.
While Scheufele wasn’t the head of the Life Sciences Communication department, he was one of the most senior faculty members with considerable influence, the student said.

“He was the guy in charge,” she said. “He’s the sun.”

Investigators later wrote there was an “inherent power imbalance” between Scheufele and the student because of Scheufele’s academic influence and role as her adviser, causing the woman to “feel obligated to remain in (his) good graces.”

What strikes me (as it has in past cases, including those at Michigan) is how academia--faculty and administrators--simply *do not want to know* about bad actors, especially when they are famous.
