I can't believe Darryl Hall put up with this shit for all those years
A tweet from Joyce Carol Oates that reads as follows: "This is why AI-generated romance novena maje perfect sense. Formulaic fiction doesn't need to be written by hand, so to speak ; what difference does it make if a machine 'writes' it? There are machine-made clothes & there are custom-made clothes. They appeal to different consumers."

Please tell your children it's cool and smart to go into the trades. I would gladly pay double for a competent plumber instead of having to hire a second plumber to fix my first plumber's obscene fuckups. They will be pulling up to your family's holiday get-togethers in Lamborghinis

I graduated 27 years ago. Yesterday my English teacher from high school emailed out of the blue to offer his detailed reviews of my books, and said how proud he was of me. I don't really know how to describe it, but it's like a Band-Aid was slapped on a portion of my heart I didn't know was bleeding

We get it, finding horror books that will creep you out is hard. But we’re willing to bet one of our books will have you second-guessing turning your light off. The following books are just a sampling of what Dead Sky Publishing has to offer.

These are the ugliest goddamned running kicks I've ever ordered (you know me so you know this is quite a statement), but friggin hell are they comfortable. They look like corrective shoes you'd slap on a sick kid in a space hospital, but I feel like I just slid my feet into two bags of marshmallows

As a broke teen in the 90s I'd figured out if you hold a Sprite upside down at the right angle, you'd spot a winning cap. I'd walk into a gas station with a dollar and the guy at the register thought I was a mini David Blaine as I cracked seven of them and brought them outside for my thirsty friends

UPDATE: I'm now on episode 245 of Naruto Shippuden. My eyeballs are bleeding. I've eaten three dozen instant ramens. The theme music haunts me at night and refuses to let me sleep. If I witness one more lesson about teamwork I'm going to shut my own head in my own car door until I decapitate myself

Like Todd, I let my wallet do the talking when the language of choice is so clearly money. I'm glad I refunded my StokerCon '27 ticket and, unless we see some very serious changes occurring, will allow my active membership to the HWA to lapse. These are not mistakes. This behavior is a pattern.

If you're a member of the HWA or were considering joining, take the time to read this. It's always about money with this organization. I choose to vote with my wallet, and have refunded my ticket to attend StokerCon 2027.

There are amazing people in the org, folks who care strongly about its success, and I admire their passion; however, there are some in the org who resort to bullying to protect said org, and in this case, to get what they want. I cannot and will not condone bullying tactics. I've been at the receiving end. It's not fun. I commend Virginia Scarre and KJ Brantley for speaking out about this and for not allowing it to be swept under the rug.

Horror writers deserve better.

I love that a trustee took one look at the nosediving HWA approval rating and was like "I know just the thing to turn those frowns upside down; making conflicts of interest my personal Alamo"
A screencap from a post from Brian Matthews on the HWA Facebook page that reads as follows:

I’ve read posts about how elected officials of the HWA should be ineligible for Bram Stoker Award consideration and I’d like to offer my view on this. It’s simply my own opinion and doesn’t reflect the views of other Board members or the HWA as an organization. Just little old me.
I think making elected officials ineligible for BSA consideration would be a bad idea. The HWA is a social networking organization of creatives meant to support creatives. It does have a leadership structure, and as a member, I would want some of the most experienced people to fill those roles. People who know the writing business inside and out. People with experience dealing with agents, editors, and publishers. People with a vast array of experiences that can help shape their vision and judgement.
I thinks it’s reasonable to expect these people would be actively creating. They are making a career out of it. And something like the BSAs can have a positive impact on a career. Receiving one might help with sales or gain visibility. It’s seen as an accomplishment.
Now tell them that, if they want to be an elected official of the HWA and try to make a difference for the organization, they need to put their career on hold (at least as it pertains to the award season and potential career advancement) for two years? Four years? Six years?
