I heeded @steveruizok.bsky.social's advice and made a little friend to help me monitor my homelab, plants, fish & integrated drone system. Getting (faux) 3D rendering on a potato was tricky!

an old textbook illustration from the 90s poorly trying to explain computers. it has a boy on a desktop and then he's astral projecting with the computer (smoke and sparkles and mist and etc) and the caption just says "remote login is a lot like astral projection"

@yiningkarlli.bsky.social 'a elaborate man-in-the-middle Renderman hackery to simulate scientifically accurate black holes is probably the most mind blowing thing I've seen at SIGGRAPH this year

Critically, it ships with visible breadcrumbs: build notes, tests, and implementation details are there for anyone who wants to build on this infrastructure without reinventing all of the complex and intricate parts from scratch: repo: github.com/usd-wg/usd-w... live demo: usd-webview.vercel.app

Today at Pixar's Open Source BoF at SIGGRAPH I'll be introducing USD Web View: an OSS webapp built for meaningful OpenUSD stage access and interaction. The project enables OpenUSD inspection, composition arc access, MaterialX support, Gaussian Splats and more, in one web-native environment:

"Take it from studies of over 450 companies and over three million employees: Return-to-office mandates fail to increase financial returns. They succeed only in motivating star employees to quit, reducing the satisfaction of those who stay and discouraging new talent from joining."

Wrote up a quick note on Gaussian splat capture using Blender, Gauss Cannon, Lichtfield, and SuperSplat. Interesting realization: arbitrary mesh geometry becomes a capture instrument. Each face becomes a camera position, directly shaping training coverage! michaelybecker.com/notes/gauss-...

MaterialX Needs a Single-File Container. Let's formalize what @polyhaven.com and @gpuopen.bsky.social material libraries are already doing with a new "mtlz" extension. Details here: ben3d.ca/blog/materia... CC: @materialx.bsky.social

MaterialX Needs a Single-File Container
MaterialX assets are multiple loose files, which breaks down in real pipelines. The community has already solved this with zip packaging. We just need to formalize it as .mtlz.

All I can say is I literally meant literally in the literal sense, as opposed to the figurative one. I think gotchas in general are a very low form of discourse, and none were intended here.

So, grace and larger context notwithstanding, I took issue with the fact the criticism - which certainly seemed to pertain to this one specific piece of writing - seemed unfair and not holding grace towards *it*. That is all.

Cat, I am not a Doctorow fan and have no inherent bias for or against either of you. I thought your critique was very interesting- interesting enough to read the original post and do my own thinking. I was almost instantly met with a direct contradiction of what you'd written.

I am not mocking you, I was pointing out that the article specifically did the thing you called it out on not doing. I was doing so in specific and non inflammatory language. I don't know you, have nothing against you, and certainly have no need to mock strangers on the internet.

Which is totally fair of course, and I added my response which - equally valid - points out you're ignoring D's concrete ideas for strategic change and calls to action to make the case he isn't making any.

Broheim, no one is policing feelings and everyone is entitled to their own. It's *also* legitimate to call out a critique on willfully ignoring key points inherent what it criticizes. Either way, white knighting isn't adding any particular value here.

Michael Becker @michaelbecker.dev · 18/01/2026
It's fine to not like the same things. I'm saying your criticism here is misplaced and untrue even at a surface level reading of the original post.
