Spooky bird stories. My Halloween comic from 2024.
A comic titled Spooky Bird Stories. In panel 1, a turkey vulture is telling stories to other vultures, and it says, "She walked toward the source of the terrible smell. She got closer and closer, and then, to her horror, she saw... No dead body." A black vulture says "No!" and a turkey vulture says "Did someone already eat it??" In panel 2, a northern cardinal is telling a story to some songbirds. It says "They peered through the windows of the house at the gory scene. Zombies had smashed through the door in the night. The homeowner was dead. But worst of all... He hadn't refilled the feeders." An eastern bluebird says "Aaah!" and an American goldfinch says "It can't be!". In panel 3, A screech owl is telling a story to other owls. It says "And then the ghost fluffed itself up really big to appear scarier." A saw-whet owl gasps, and a long-eared owl says "Horrifying!". In panel 4, a downy woodpecker is telling a story to other woodpeckers, and says "The eerie sound rang through the dark woods. Tap-tap. Tap-tap. It was the distinctive two-part knock of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker. The species had returned from the dead... FOR REVENGE." A red-cockaded woodpecker says "Yesss".

Can planets emerge from the deaths of stars? 💀 Astronomers looking through Hubble data from 1999 have identified unusual amounts of niobium in the chemical signatures from a white dwarf. 🔭 🧪
Artist's impression of a gaseous planet in the right foreground, seen mostly in silhouette, orbits a small, white star in the background at left. The star is surrounded by a thin, bright white disk tilted from lower left to upper right. A semi-transparent tail of material comes off the planet toward the upper right. Distant stars dot the black background of space. Credit: NASA, ESA, L. Hustak (STScI)

WELL NOW, would you look at that? A massive, 4-YEAR-LONG study of NEARLY 30 MILLION people in France found that individuals who received a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine had a 74% LOWER risk of death from severe COVID-19 compared to unvaccinated individuals and ZERO increased risk of all-cause mortality.

Astronomy news for spooky season: a zombie planet orbiting a dead (but still hostile) star. Evidence suggests the following: Star dies, expels outer layers, becomes white dwarf. Gas giant forms from the debris. White dwarf is now blasting planet with radiation, shearing off some of its atmosphere.

Two big lessons of the last few years: the idea of the turing test is moot because the bar for what people will ascribe sentience to is in the toilet, and a very vocal chunk of people are still more concerned with the welfare of unthinking programs than the lives of humans

This had me laughing out loud. Well done.
A Facebook post from Kate Penney Howard. It reads “Beloved, we are gathered here today to celebrate the life of Microsoft Publisher.

And before we begin, I ask that you silence your phones, bow your heads, and make sure you have selected “Print on both sides. Flip on short edge.” Because even in death, Publisher will have half this program upside down.

Can I get a print preview?
Thank you.

Publisher was a faithful servant. When the church needed a bulletin, Publisher answered. When the family needed a reunion program, Publisher answered. When somebody said, “Can we fit all seventeen announcements on one page and still leave room for a dove?”
Publisher said, “With God, all things are possible. With eight-point font, most things will fit.”

It took ordinary people and made them believe they were graphic designers.
They were not. But it gave them confidence.
And sometimes, church, confidence is all that stands between a blank page and six competing fonts.

Let us remember its ministry.
The bake-sale flyer. The funeral program. The pastor's anniversary poster. The graduation invitation featuring a photograph stretched beyond all anatomical possibility.
Publisher never said, “That’s too much WordArt.”
Publisher said, “Would you like a shadow?”
“Would you like a bevel?”
“Would you like this entire Scripture passage shaped like a wave?””The Facebook post continues: “And somebody said yes. Somebody in this very room. We will not call names at a funeral. But somebody said yes.

Now, I know there are those who say, “You can just use Word.” Beloved. We are grieving. Please do not provoke us. We have all moved a photograph one-quarter inch in Microsoft Word and watched an entire document leave the will of God. The picture went to page seven. The heading went to page three. A blank page appeared that no prayer could remove.

But Publisher understood a simple truth:
When I put something somewhere, that is where I want it to stay.

Somebody ought to stand up for that.
Now they tell us to move to Canva.
And Canva is lovely. We wish Canva well.
But some of us do not need a brand journey. We need the fish fry to start at six, the address to fit under the fish, and the fish to be free.
We do not need a little crown appearing on the fish after we have already built the whole flyer around it. The fish has been called to serve. Why is it premium?

Publisher is survived by thousands of .pub files, a folder called “Church Stuff,” and a woman who has been saying, “Do not touch that computer; it has the newsletter on it,” since 2009.
It leaves behind unfinished brochures, beloved templates, and a document named:
Bulletin_FINAL_Updated_REALFINAL_USETHISONE2.pub”The Facebook post concludes: “We ask that you respect the family’s privacy as they determine which version contains the correct hymn numbers.

And to Microsoft, seated here on the front row:
We appreciate the flowers.
We would have appreciated continued support more.
But this is a funeral, and I have been asked to keep my remarks appropriate.

So rest now, Publisher.
Your text boxes are aligned.
Your margins are even.
Your images are embedded.
You have fought the good fight. You have finished the newsletter. You have kept the clip art.

And when you reach those pearly gates, if Saint Peter asks whether you have anything to declare, tell him: “I brought the program.”
Amen. And amen.

Please assemble in the the fellowship hall. Please disregard the flyer that says fellowship hell.
Spellcheck was never its strongest ministry.”The Facebook post ends with the last Microsoft Publisher logo in the Find a Grave website.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

A tweet from me in September 2022 that reads It's more profitable and legal to just like destroy one of the oldest studios in Hollywood so they're doing it with absolutely no chagrin or hesitation or concern for what this does to art and media and culture.
