Willomina is a determined purple-haired girl with startling green eyes and a dowsing stick, carrying her toddler brother Kes on her back. There's Mephisto, a green cat with a stripey body and a scarf,, and Boop, a little pink snub-nosed dragon. Also the premonition library looms large behind them and there's some green tentacles for good measure.

Screen are partly responsible for this: reading becomes less appealing when your brain is flickering all the time. But comics combine images + words, and your brain has to piece them all togeter like a fun game to get meaning. Which is right up kids’ street.

That made us think: when we do author visits we always ask kids to raise their hands if they read comics. When we started author visits in 2009, only a handful raised their hands. Now most of them do.

The lack of will to develop the visual imagination ✍️🎨 of a child alongside their literary imagination 📖📚 (and other creative capacities) is part of the reason human society is in such trouble. The visually and emotionally illiterate aspect of humankind is in the ascendent.

We went back to Daydreams bookshop on our day off as they’d already sold out of Wilomina books! After our school visits in the area last week kids have been coming in asking for our Wilomina graphic novel, so we went back and signed another pile of books.
