Working with one of the Big Two seems to involve differing marketing strategies than what one expects from Marvel or DC. This is neither criticism nor complaint, mind you.

@metaphrog.bsky.social I couldn't put it down! This is so, so brilliant -- perfect for fans of fast-paced fantasy adventures with characters you would follow into chasms (and, um, you do!) Book 2 when?? 🥰 PS: I would die for Boop 🥹 (H/T to @louiestowell.bsky.social for mentioning it!)

The cover for Willomina: The Land of Dreams and Nightmares by John Chalmers and Sandra Marr. Willomina is a determined purple-haired girl with startling green eyes and a dowsing stick, carrying her toddler brother Kes on her back. There's Mephisto, a green cat with a stripey body and a scarf,, and Boop, a little pink snub-nosed dragon. Also the premonition library looms large behind them and there's some green tentacles for good measure.

Thank you so much! Book 2 is out in 2027, circa Aug/Sept. Boop will be in it a lot!

Screen are partly responsible for this: reading becomes less appealing when your brain is flickering all the time. But comics combine images + words, and your brain has to piece them all togeter like a fun game to get meaning. Which is right up kids’ street.

JohnChalmers+SandraMarrs=Metaphrog @metaphrog.bsky.social · 18/09/2026

Absolutely! Comics are definitely still growing.

JohnChalmers+SandraMarrs=Metaphrog @metaphrog.bsky.social · 17/09/2026

That made us think: when we do author visits we always ask kids to raise their hands if they read comics. When we started author visits in 2009, only a handful raised their hands. Now most of them do.

The lack of will to develop the visual imagination ✍️🎨 of a child alongside their literary imagination 📖📚 (and other creative capacities) is part of the reason human society is in such trouble. The visually and emotionally illiterate aspect of humankind is in the ascendent.
