How dare the National Museum of the American Indian refer to George Washington with a name that he was given by the Iroquois in 1753, a name which he himself used in his correspondence! So glad to see Fox News taking a stand against the politicization of history. s/

Smithsonian museum labels George Washington a
"town destroyer" while omitting why he ordered the attacks.
The National Museum of the American Indian's exhibit describes the destruction of 40 Iroquois towns but leaves out that the campaign was a direct response to devastating raids that crippled the Continental Army, destroyed frontier settlements and took prisoners.
The Trump administration has threatened funding cuts over what it calls the Smithsonian's push to reframe America's founding as "a deeply flawed creation of the country."

Treating this a little bit seriously, one of the nice things about works in the public domain is that every age gets to approach them differently, find the parts that resonate with them and bring them to the fore. Nolan's Odyssey is deeply different than the one made in the 90s, 70s or 50s would be.

In this week’s newsletter, we preview a rare auction event featuring original Michael Whelan cover art from The Martian Tales by Edgar Rice Burroughs... theartofmichaelwhelan.substack.com/p/john-carte...
John Carter fights side-by-side with Tars Tarkas. In Barsoomian fashion, John Carter is completely naked. He pierces the chest of a blue plant man with a skilled thrust of his rapier. The anatomy of his green alien companion is fascinating in that Tars Tarkas has a second torso stacked on the first. He towers over all around him. Two large tusks jut fiercely out of his lower jaw, and his eyes are set on the side of his head. Tars Tarkas draws back a rapier in one of his four arms. His other lower arm guards with rapier held laterally. The two allies are framed by a milky white boulder with a shiny gold vein running through it. Despite outnumbering the two heroes, the plant men seem to find only death in their approach up the red grassy hill. In addition to the troop of plant men, white apes with four arms approach from out of the trees. Above the scene, two craggy moons hang in clear blue skies above the gold rimmed valley where the fighting takes place.

Non-euclidian architecture was the height of design back in the time before humans, a subtle but maddening asymmetry that permeates the mythos of H.P. Lovecraft. Angles that aren't right: that alone unnerved, but was only the beginning. #FolkloreSunday 🖼: S. Sanz
S. Sanz' depiction of Cthulhu rising from his tomb at R'yleh as depicted in the story The Call of Cthulhu: the city walls lack any symmetry, with towering spires that look quite strange, and massive clawed hands with tentacles hanging from the arms scrape the walls of the building. A half dozen humans from a ship exploring R'yleh begin to stammer back in fear.

Today is Prickle-Prickle, the 35th day of Bureaucracy in the YOLD 3192 -><- Today's Emoji Oracle reading: 🚂 Steam Locomotive (locomotive, transportation, vehicle, train, steam_locomotive) 🍘 Rice Cracker (rice_cracker, food, japanese, snack, senbei)
Alt-text: A chunky cartoon steam locomotive in black, gray, orange, and gold rolls against a black background, but instead of smoke, its chimney puffs out a procession of round orange rice crackers. Each cracker carries a dark rectangular strip of nori and little toasted dots, floating through a translucent gray cloud above the engine like delicious particulate emissions. One especially large senbei appears to be landing on the cab roof. The mashup converts coal-powered transportation into snack-powered rail: all aboard the carbo-hydrate express.

Contextual vibe for Prickle-Prickle, the 35th day of Bureaucracy in the YOLD 3192: the steam locomotive (🚂) brings schedules, infrastructure, industrial momentum, predetermined tracks, and an almost aggressively orderly way of getting somewhere. The rice cracker (🍘) brings food, portability, crunch, and a small pleasure suitable for eating en route. Order lays the rails and publishes the timetable. Disorder replaces the steam with airborne senbei. Chaos encompasses both—the rigid track and the ridiculous cargo, destination and improvisation, machinery and snack. And on day 35 = 5×7, the Sacred Five once again sneaks into Bureaucracy's arithmetic. Today's Oracle: the train remains on schedule; the snack distribution system has become atmospheric. 🚂🍘

Richard Drew/AP
2001 09 11 9:41 EST

An edit of a photo by Richard Drew/AP taken on
2001 09 11 9:41 EST.

Richard Drew has never [not talked the photo]. Although he has preserved the jacket patterned with [Senator Robert Kennedy’s] blood, he has never not taken a picture, never averted his eye. He works for the Associated Press. He is a journalist. It is not up to him to reject the images that fill his frame, because one never knows when history is made until one makes it. It is not even up to him to distinguish if a body is alive or dead, because the camera makes no such distinctions, and he is in the business of shooting bodies, as all photographers are, unless they are Ansel Adams. Indeed, he was shooting bodies on the morning of September 11, 2001. On assignment for the AP, he was shooting a maternity fashion show in Bryant Park, notable, he says, "because it featured actual pregnant models." He was fifty-four years old. He wore glasses. He was sparse in the scalp, gray in the beard, hard in the head. In a lifetime of taking pictures, he has found a way to be both mild-mannered and brusque, patient and very, very quick. He was doing what he always does at fashion shows—"staking out real estate"—when a CNN cameraman with an earpiece said that a plane had crashed into the North Tower, and Drew's editor rang his cell phone. He packed his equipment into a bag and gambled on taking the subway downtown. Although it was still running, he was the only one on it. He got out at the Chambers Street station and saw that both towers had been turned into smokestacks. Staking out his real estate, he walked west, to where ambulances were gathering, because rescue workers "usually won't throw you out." Then he heard people gasping. People on the ground were gasping because people in the building were jumping. He started shooting pictures through a 200mm lens….’
