Hard to overstate how much of the "iconoclastic free-thinkers" who the White House thinks be given most of the nation's research money are mostly mediocre rich people who resent their supposed inferiors' successes. A lot of it is just elitism, an aristocracy clawing for its status back.

Our new paper on historic redlining and the spatial patterns of U.S. greenspaces. We found that redlined neighborhoods had less greenspace, smaller greenspaces, and lower connectivity among greenspace. Justice-centered urban greening should prioritize these neighborhoods.🧪

Can all my fellow scientists please review at least two times the number of papers you publish? It is so hard to get reviewers these days, and that really hurts young scientists especially!

This semester I’ve struggled with what it means to be a professor. I’ve worked hard to be a good scientist and do research I find cool and (maybe) impactful. But I question how that is contributing to our current society. I found this piece thought provoking. www.nytimes.com/2026/05/20/o...

This take feels like the “guns don’t kill people, people kill people” argument. Sure, you’re not wrong but smartphones are the tool/mechanism that connects the algorithm to the person and thus causes the effect. Kids don’t need unfettered access to the internet.

An extraordinary paragraph. buff.ly/uH5ykhX
The secret fear of the morally depraved is that virtue is actually common, and that they're the ones who are alone. In Minnesota, all of the ideological cornerstones of MAGA have been proved false at once. Minnesotans, not the armed thugs of ICE and the Border Patrol, are brave. Minnesotans have shown that their community is socially cohesivebecause of its diversity and not in spite of it. Minnesotans have found and loved one another in a world atomized by social media, where empty men have tried to fill their lonely soul with lies about their own inherent superiority. Minnesotans have preserved everything worthwhile about "Western civilization," while armed brutes try to tear it down by force.

This is literally what it was like in DC and LA, then Chicago, then Portland, and now Minneapolis. Don’t be surprised when it comes to a city near you. They’ve shot someone in every city that they have had large operations and have now killed two people. It’s going to keep happening.

The problem with the Democratic Party is that we really need to go to war with the rich, and the Democrats are addicted to their money. They need to completely rethink how they do politics. Exclusively small-dollar donations, a tiny and cheap convention, and a vigorously anti-billionaire agenda.
