If my dissertation has typos or errors in logic then it's not my fault because this is how I'm writing it half of the time 🥴🥺

Besides all of the cooking/baking things I share (when I remember to take photos...🫣), I've been channeling my "penultimate months of PhD anxiety" into learning how to knit! I've been working on a sweater for a few weeks now, and it's actually starting to ~look~ like a sweater 🤩

I am gobsmacked & honored to have received awards for both of my presentations at the AMS Annual Meeting last month. I want to thank the conference organizers & those who gave me helpful feedback on my research. These interactions will help me shape this work as I enter the final months of my PhD.

Today at #AMS2026 I am presenting both a talk and a poster from my PhD work (which I will be finishing this summer! 🫨). My talk will cover 7 years of storm-total precip verification and my poster digs deeper into the driving mechanisms of a poor forecast from Hurricane Henri (2021). 🌧️

One of my goals for 2026 was to learn how to knit! I've been crocheting for over a decade and have attempted knitting a couple of times with no success. I am SO pleased that this time knitting has clicked! Meet Poppy the chicken! 🐓🧶

NCAR provides the facilities, tools, & data critical for atmospheric sci education & research. Leading computer models of the Earth System are developed here. The training, continuing education, & sci exchanges NCAR makes possible are irreplaceable. Its dismantling would be chaotic & devastating.

While most attention is rightfully on Jamaica with Cat. 5 Melissa...note also the trailing bands of heavy rain pumping into southwestern Haiti's Tiburon Peninsula. Likely rainfall rates of several inches per hour into an extremely flash flood, mudslide prone area.

Heartbreaking visible image of a potentially generational storm, and a likely reflection of broader trends—greater ocean warmth and depth of warmth, faster intensification rates, slower forward speeds, and greater rainfall rates.

The situation in the weather world is bad right now. -Large private sector company badgering NWS -NWS under direct assault by current government -GOP members of Congress in high weather risk areas believing AI and apps work better than NWS. All of this makes us less safe. Full stop.

RIP Airborne Phased Array Radar (APAR) 😞 Many of my colleagues and friends worked on this technology. I had hoped to use it someday. www.eol.ucar.edu/airborne-pha...
Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to share the difficult news that we were informed on Friday afternoon that NSF has suspended their support for the Airborne Phased Array Radar (APAR) through the Mid-Scale Research Infrastructure-2 program. The original $91.8 million grant was awarded to NSF NCAR in May of 2023.

We are now working with NSF on a timeline and next steps for closing the project down, and we are in the process of determining what this will mean for staff working on APAR. In the meantime, we are meeting directly with those who are being impacted to answer their questions as best we can and provide support.

While there are many questions we cannot yet answer, I felt it was important to let you all know of this NSF decision as soon as possible. As we gather more information and have a clearer picture of the future, I will share more details with you. However, I would like to briefly touch on a few important points.

First, I believe that the decision to cancel funding for APAR is based on a number of factors. These include some unanticipated cost and schedule challenges related to the project's complexity as well as a difficult federal budget outlook for science in general and science infrastructure in particular. However, I do not believe that this decision to cut funding is a reflection of APAR’s scientific value. APAR’s potential to be a transformative tool for observing hurricanes and other severe weather remains. This is exactly the type of next-generation observational tool that our organization should be developing and deploying for community use in order to push science forward and respond to urgent societal needs.

I also want to take this opportunity to recognize and thank the APAR team. They have been working incredibly hard to make this project successful. When you set out to do something that has never been done before, there are nearly always challenges that are incredibly difficult to anticipate. Overcoming these obstacles can be hard, but taking on this kind of high-risk, fundamental research is at the heart of our mission and it is critical that we don’t shy away from these projects, as difficult as they are.

I have been impressed at every turn with the APAR team’s dedication and creativity in the face of these challenges, and I want to make clear that the inability to move forward with APAR is not related to the quality of their work. I am also grateful to our many partners and subcontractors on this project, whose work on this project has been invaluable. Finally, I want to affirm NSF NCAR’s commitment to APAR. While this is a significant setback, and the way forward is not certain, we know from engaging with our research community that this instrument is needed. With that in mind, we plan to explore every possible path forward in the near and long term to continue to make progress.

Sincerely,
Everette

BREAKING from @science.org: The Trump admin is seeking to kill nearly all climate research at NOAA, its climate science agency. Its near-final budget proposal would end all NOAA research labs, academic institutes, and regional climate centers. And it wants to fully end the NOAA Research division.

NOAA is the backbone of the US weather enterprise. The rest of the enterprise needs to step up. Support the folks who lost their jobs. Support the communities who lost NOAA personnel. Boost the efforts of the NWS that remains as we get into severe and hurricane season.

The NWS is already short-staffed, making it much harder for the meteorologists who do crucial work to keep us all safe. NWS mets already work long shifts at all hours of the day. We will all be less safe because of this.
