You don’t need a New Year’s resolution. You need a day’s. Do the right thing today. And then do it again tomorrow. That’s it. All it takes is your life. Day after day. That’s how life is lived. And how it’s wasted. Your choice. We all matter or none of us do. And all means all

I miss a lot of things about my grandmothers, but what strikes me is how little -- if any -- of it is centered in what a Large Language Model or generated images or video or audio could give me back. It's the rooms that my imagination still dwells in. The food I still eat. Haptics of presence.

It’s been almost a year of iterating on this Shortcut. The original design assumed I had more self control that I actually do. It was too easy to just cheat and always choose the option that would let me keep watching videos. Turns out, I’m just a little YouTube gremlin and I can’t be trusted.

If you look at the state of the world and start feeling like hope is pointless, I want to share this passage from @prisonculture.bsky.social and @mskellymhayes.bsky.social's book LET THIS RADICALIZE YOU, from the chapter "Hope and Grief Can Coexist." www.haymarketbooks.org/books/1922-l...
Just as patience is a practice, rather than a feeling, hope and grief are not simply things we feel but things we enact in the world.

When we enact grief with intention, and in concert with other people, we can find and create moments of relief, comfort, and even joy—and those moments can sustain us. As Malkia Devich-Cyril writes, “Becoming aware of grief gives us more choices about how to respond to grief and opens up possibilities to approach grief not only with compassion for self and others, but also with joy. Joy is not the opposite of grief. Grief is the opposite of indifference.”

Hope, too, requires us to reject indifference. And like any indifference-rejecting phenomenon, it demands effort in order to thrive. When we talk about hope in these times, we are not prescribing optimism. Rather, we are talking about a practice and a discipline … This practice of hope allows us to remain creative and strategic. It does not require us to deny the severity of our situation or detract from our practice of grief. To practice active hope, we do not need to believe that everything will work out in the end. We need only decide who we are choosing to be and how we are choosing to function in relation to the outcome we desire and abide by what those decision demand of us.

AI has always promised to help people spend more time doing valuable work by automating the manual, repetitive, toilsome tasks so that software developers can be free to use their time on "something better". That's not what's happening.

The promise that wasn’t kept
AI is distracting us from creating real value. While we chase speed and automation, meaningful and human-centered work is getting left behind. Is this progress?

It is not the point of you to “scale.” You are not at scale. If you are able to do something that helps one person, you helped one person, and that is more than there were before. If you are part of a community that helps people, you are contributing to helping people at scale.

One of my goals for 2025 is to spend less time binging YouTube videos. I made a Shortcut to help me be more intentional when I open the YouTube app on my phone.
Screenshot of an iOS Shortcut menu.

Prompt: Stop emoji. Why are you here?
Option 1: I’m bored. I should find something else to do.
Option 2: I want to watch something specific.
Option 3: I’m relaxing. I should set a timer so I don’t lose track of time.

Generally we think of alt-text as the domain of those with accessibility needs. However alt-text is useful for many reasons, which benefit your viewers, as well as you, the creator!
An infographic. There are six panels.

1. "Slow internet. Alt text is shown in place of unloaded images." a drawing shows a phone with poor signal, and alt text is visible where the image should have loaded.

2. "Findabillity. Alt text helps to search content." A drawing shows someone searching 'dog with banana' and a post is shown underneath without the words 'dog' or 'banana'. It is implied to be part of the alt text.

3. "Screen readers. Alt is read out to people using text-to-speech software". There is a drawing of the output a screen-reader would show when viewing an image with alt text on bluesky.

4. "Translation. Alt text can be translated". A drawing shows a post being translated. The alt text is also translated into german.

5. "Readability. Text in images can be made legible" There is a drawing of some truly awful handwriting inside a speech bubble. The alt text clarifies what the text is supposed to say.

6. "Disambiguation. Description helps clarify intent." There is a drawing of a post with a picture of a creature. This is styled after the famous optical illusion of a rabbit and a duck. The alt text clarifies that the animal is a rabbit. It definitely looks more like a duck.
