The correct way to connect the authoritarian presence in LA and the Big Beautiful Bill is that the bill gives the government the resources to do this in dozens of cities at once. So if you don't like what's happening in LA, it's coming to your town if the bill passes.

Update on tornado recovery efforts.
The Fire Department and Police Department are continuing to clear homes in the affected grid.

Ameren is ensuring there are no more live wires before restoring power. Three major power substations are down, with over 90K customer power outages; it is expected to take days to restore power with no estimated timeline available at this time.

All Parks, Recreation, and Forestry staff have been called in for emergency declaration with mandatory work from 7a-7p.

The Water Division will address or fix reports of water main breaks by first shutting off water in affected areas and then address damage in the coming days.

4,500 – 5,000 buildings have been impacted; inspectors will be out again tomorrow after buildings are cleared by fire and police.

It is too early to determine a process for demolition/stabilization, but the City will focus on unsafe structures first.Familes and individuals who need emergency shelter can contact the following Red Cross partners:

The Recreational Center (12th and Park Recreation Center)
1410 S. Tucker Blvd, MO 63104
(314) 589-6142

Grace United Methodist Church
6199 Waterman Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63112
(314) 863-1992

Friendly Temple Outreach Center
6356 Dr. Martin Luther King Drive, St. Louis, MO 63133
(314) 367-9700

We appreciate city residents who want to help their neighbors. For now, please stay away from affected areas all day Saturday, May 17, 2025, to leave room for emergency crews and departments to clear the area and ensure it is safe.

Updates on how/when people can help later will be shared once affected areas have been stabilized.

My statement regarding the passage of HJR 73, a ballot initiative that would overturn the abortion protections we voted into law less than a year ago.
Republican lawmakers have once again demonstrated a willingness to ignore the will of the people and control people’s personal lives. Today’s passage of HJR 73 not only undermines democracy, it criminalizes doctors for making critical healthcare decisions and vilifies members of our transgender community for seeking vital gender affirming care.

Missouri won abortion rights at the ballot box last November and we’ll do it again if this misleading measure makes it to voters.

There really needs to be more public discussion about how these “bans” criminalize the existence of some people and in doing so normalize fascist ideologies under the guise of public safety. Too many well meaning liberals don’t seem to understand this correlation. It’s dangerous.
