The Shabti ebook is finally available again on Amazon. Listed under a different listing from all the other formats, with an incorrect spelling of my name, for about twice the price of the previous Kindle edition. (But less expensive Google Play version still seems to be available for now!)

So I have a prop top hat that I got at some point for book marketing purposes. It eventually fell into the hands of my younger child, who played with it to the point that it began to fall apart. But, behold!!! The top hat facade has fallen away, only to reveal A TINY BOWLER HAT beneath

The way ppl talk about 19th-century photography: 1) Someone looks a little odd/stiff? OBVIOUSLY DEAD 2) Nobody smiled or goofed around for a photo! Ever! Exposure times were 7-10 business days for the entire first 100 years of photography & a photo portrait cost $10 million modern US dollars!

So with The Chosen One Con, our MC Max is quite a self-centred character and makes selfish choices. Some people are going to find him unlikable, especially at first! But he gets better. There are reasons for why he is the way he is, and I like exploring his character!

I’m not sure "divided" is the right word but I knew a bunch of decisions I made for "Faux Ho Ho" were born of spite, so. One I knew for sure though was having Silas note that while he’s gay, he’s also cis and white so… he should probably hire more queer historians for his queer history game.

Making Bekah nonbinary in The Widow’s Vampire. It doesn’t have a huge impact on the plot and is only directly addressed once, but I had fans of my work say that was the last book of mine they’d ever read. Including family members. Which is crazy because I made them enby because I am.

Not naming the kingdom, king, or even the Prophesized Hero from Traitor and the Wretch. I wanted the world to feel like a stage set, where just about any classic high fantasy could be slotted in seamlessly, because Percy and Knell's roles in any of those worlds would have been the same.

Yes. Giving my characters highly individual and distinctive speaking styles is one of my favorite things to do, to the point where it occasionally annoys readers. 🫣 One relatively subtle example from The Shabti: Hermann’s use of slang tends to be a decade or so out of date.

I am trying to learn how to paint like the ‘30s pulp cover artists, and it is a *struggle*. This obviously has a loooong way to go overall, but there’s something deeply satisfying about doing eyes this way with the little cartoony wedge highlight. 😆
