THREAD. Packing up in spring for our house move, I found this: it was my mum's first attempt at capturing my cat The Bear (RIP) via a quick chalk sketch. 2013, perhaps? So simple, but so great, and it proved to be the catalyst for what has been a huge amount of creativity in her retirement...

If this is all unfamiliar to you, let this remind you how normal it is for women to contemplate whether they are being targeted for attack in all sorts of places, from bars to parking lots to hiking trails. As I said in Recollections of My Nonexistence, it gets you even if it doesn't get you.

Today is Election Day and we got up early to get ahead of the queues. My husband laughed when he saw what I was wearing and asked if I wanted EVERYONE to know what party I was voting for. Which lead to an interesting discussion about political biases on the way there. What do "conservatives" wear? 🤔

Yup. I know bullies online who are perfectly pleasant offline, and what I take from that is "Oh, so you know how to behave when you might get punched." And to tell on myself, this is one reason I'm a nicer person online now than I was a decade+ ago. I stopped liking that version of me, a lot.

The oddest thing about the response to this essay is people who say it’s “personal”. You can disagree about some or all of it! I may well be wrong! But it’s not “personal” to analyze a film or other work of art, even negatively. Criticism is more than “Hurray!” or “Hiss!”

I've decided to compile a definitive thread of photos of the best cattle I've photographed during my walks in the countryside, together with supporting biographical information. I will put the vital info about all the cattle in the alt text, since some of it is a little long to fit in a post.
A highland cow who has seven beers since lunchtime, walked a new way home, realised she is lost, and decided the best option for the time being is to go to sleep, using a moorland boulder as a pillow.

‘Say yes and never do it’ Mel Brooks knew how to deal with the studios
You have some wonderful stories of basically getting away with stuff at the studios.

I’d learned one very simple trick: say yes. Simply say yes. Like Joseph E. Levine, on “The Producers,” said, “The curly-haired guy—he’s funny looking. Fire him.” He wanted me to fire Gene Wilder. And I said, “Yes, he’s gone. I’m firing him.” I never did. But he forgot. After the screening of “Blazing Saddles,” the head of Warner Bros. threw me into the manager’s office, gave me a legal pad and a pencil, and gave me maybe twenty notes. He would have changed “Blazing Saddles” from a daring, funny, crazy picture to a stultified, dull, dusty old Western. He said, “No farting.” I said, “It’s out.”That’s probably the most famous scene in the movie, the campfire scene.

I know. He said, “You can’t punch a horse.” I said, “You’ll never see it again.” I kept saying, “You’re absolutely right. It’s out!” Then, when he left, I crumpled up all his notes, and I tossed it in the wastepaper basket. And John Calley, who was running [production at] Warner Bros. at the time, said, “Good filing.” That was the end of it. You say yes, and you never do it.

That’s great advice for life.

It is. Don’t fight them. Don’t waste your time struggling with them and trying to make sense to them. They’ll never understand.

A revolting habit of patriarchy's upholders is insisting all women are there to be judged as pleasing or not pleasing their sad little libidos. And really it's not even about that: it's about displaying to other upholders that they are the anointed judges and not the judged. But judge him. Harshly.
