Traditional Japanese umbrella, Jurin-ji temple (十輪寺), Kyoto. Photography by Damien Douxchamps on Flickr.
Gazing upward from beneath the glowing canopy of a traditional oil-paper umbrella (wagasa), the viewer is enveloped in a sea of radiant, sun-drenched crimson. A precise radial matrix of fine, split-bamboo ribs radiates outward from a central spindle, woven with an intricate, geometric web of structural threadwork. Through the translucent, oiled washi paper, the dark silhouettes of leafy tree branches project like delicate ink brushstrokes against a glowing red sky. The scene evokes a rich, immersive sensory atmosphere: the warm, vermilion-tinted light filtering onto the face, the faint, earthy aroma of perilla oil and aged bamboo, the soft rustle of wind through temple trees overhead, and the deep, quiet sanctuary formed beneath the red dome.
Captured within the tranquil grounds of Jurin-ji (十輪寺)—a historic Tendai temple in western Kyoto famously known as Narihira-dera after the celebrated Heian-period poet Ariwara no Narihira—this large outdoor umbrella (nodaigasa) traditionally shelters guests during open-air tea gatherings (nodate). The construction of a traditional wagasa represents one of Japan's most refined heritage crafts, where a single length of bamboo is meticulously split into dozens of flexible ribs, joined to a hand-carved wooden hub, and stretched with hand-poured mulberry paper sealed with natural vegetable oils. Every detail—from the structural tension of the bamboo frame to the delicate hand-strung thread reinforcement (kikyō-buki)—honors centuries of monozukuri (artisanal mastery and reverence for material), transforming a functional shade into a portable architectural sanctuary.

1777: Showers, loud thunder, heavy showers, bright stars. This day, Mr Richardson of Bramshot shot a wood-cock: it was large & plump & a female: it lay in a moorish piece of ground. This bird was sent to London, where as the porter carryed it along the streets he was offered a guinea for it.

Sleeping Buddha, Nanzoin Temple, Fukuoka, Japan.
Gently resting its head upon its hand in peaceful meditation, the colossal bronze Reclining Buddha (Nehanzō) reclines against a backdrop of dense mountain foliage. The statue’s soft verdigris patina glows beneath a diffuse sky, highlighting the calm, serene contours of its closed eyes, sculpted hair curls (nikkei), and golden byakugō mark on its forehead. In the foreground, neat rows of dark stone memorial steles, meticulously engraved with gilded Japanese characters, stand like quiet guardians at the foot of the monumental figure. The scene invokes an ethereal sensory atmosphere: the crisp mountain air of Sasaguri, the fragrant drift of burning incense from nearby altars, the rustle of cedar leaves in the valley breeze, and a profound, enveloping silence that settles over the sacred sanctuary
Located at Nanzo-in Temple in Sasaguri, Fukuoka Prefecture, this grand bronze monument—stretching 41 meters in length, 11 meters in height, and weighing approximately 300 tons—is celebrated as one of the largest bronze statues in the world. Erected in 1995, the Nehanzō was constructed to house sacred Buddhist relics gifted from Myanmar as an expression of gratitude for decades of medical supplies and humanitarian aid provided by the temple. Nanzo-in also serves as the chief location on the historic Sasaguri 88 Temple Pilgrimage route, welcoming pilgrims into the forested hills of Kyushu. The extraordinary bronze casting and structural engineering required to realize the massive monument embody the zenith of Japanese monozukuri (artisanal mastery and technological precision), integrating monumental art harmoniously within the surrounding topography.

Photographed by Stéphane Barbery, this portrait captures Noh actor Matsuno Hiroyuki portraying Shizuka Gozen in the classical drama Funabenkei (船弁慶).
In deep monochrome contrast, a Noh actor partially reveals a serene, sculpted Noh mask from behind a painted folding fan (ōgi). Crowned with a black ceremonial tate-eboshi cap and wearing a lavishly woven karaori robe, the performer holds the fan—adorned with delicate chrysanthemums and cherry blossoms—to frame half his face in quiet contemplation. The intricate geometric patterns, tortoiseshell motifs, and maple leaves embroidered into the silk create a tactile interplay of luster and deep shadow against the dark background, drawing the eye into a space of dramatic tension. The smooth, lacquered surface of the mask catches the light, isolating the figure in a moment of stillness.
his portrait captures Noh actor Matsuno Hiroyuki portraying Shizuka Gozen in the classical drama Funabenkei (船弁慶). Authored by Kanze Kojirō Nobumitsu, the play recounts the heartbreaking separation of warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune from his mistress Shizuka Gozen, followed by a sea voyage disrupted by the vengeful ghost of Taira no Tomomori. In the opening act, Shizuka Gozen performs a farewell dance to pray for Yoshitsune's safety, conveying both sorrow and quiet dignity. The carved cypress mask (hinoki) and Nishijin brocade karaori robe represent the heritage of Japanese monozukuri (traditional artisanal craftsmanship), preserving centuries-old techniques of textile and mask design.

'A Karakirghiz with Chinese Glasses', Kyrgyz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, Ella Maillart, 1932

A nomadic Karakirghiz hunter on horseback, poses with a large golden eagle (or berkut) used for hunting small game. Berkutchi are Central Asian nomadic hunters who train wild golden eagles (berkut).

Rather than treating the bird as a pet, it is considered a sacred life partner. They almost exclusively capture and train female golden eagles because they are significantly larger, stronger, and more aggressive hunters than males.

A young eagle is typically taken from its nest and trained intensely for several years. It hunts cooperatively with its owner for about 10 to 15 years before being released back into the wild to find a mate, ensure its bloodline and live out its natural life.

This hunter wears traditional thick attire suitable for mountain terrains, protective eyewear, and a specialized gauntlet to shield his arm from the bird's massive talons.

An elaborate iron gate fills the image, covered in a variable light green patina.

The main section of the gate is evenly spaced vertical bars, in the center of them is a large disk shape – the inner portion has an eight pointed flower, surrounding that is a heavily detailed egg and dart section.

The outer border of the gate is a scrolling floral pattern between plain bars.

You can see the brown brick church beyond through the gate.
