Autumn in Tokyo / Ginkgo tree at Meiji Jingu Gaien. Photography by Yoshihiro Ogawa on Flickr.
Captured along the famous avenue of Meiji Jingū Gaien in Tokyo, this photograph by Yoshihiro Ogawa presents a vertical perspective through a tunnel of ancient ginkgo trees (ichiyō). Thick, dark trunks with deeply furrowed bark align in rhythmic succession along the left foreground, their massive, gnarled branches reaching upward and arching gracefully across the frame. Above, the dense canopy transitions from vibrant lime-green into brilliant, luminescent gold, glowing under soft, diffused autumnal light. On the ground below, lush green ground-cover plants are sprinkled with fallen golden fan-shaped leaves, bordering a low wooden fence line that recedes into the soft-focus distance on the right.

Dazzle camouflage was created during WW1 to protect British ships from German artillery - it works by making it difficult to estimate range of speed and heading. Edward Wadsworth supervised the design of of the camouflage patterns. This is his 'Dazzle Ships in Drydock,' from 1919

Evening” in Osaka, Japan. Photography by Huang Louis on 500px
Visual and Sensory Analysis
Captured at nightfall at the entrance of Hozenji Yōchō in Osaka, this photograph by Huang Louis frames a narrow stone-paved alleyway (ishitami) through a traditional wooden gateway topped with a small tiled roof. At the center, a suspended wooden plaque displays the gilded calligraphy "法善寺横丁" (Hozenji Yōchō), illuminated by two warm overhead lanterns that cast a soft golden glow upon the timber grain. Two radiant red cylindrical lanterns frame the entrance, their dark characters echoing the alleyway's name. In the background, the lane recedes into an intimate, layered depth where the shadowed silhouettes of evening strollers mingle with the soft, inviting lights of traditional izakaya and dining establishments. The rain-slicked granite paving stones catch and scatter the vibrant crimson and gold reflections of the glowing signboards.

The scene awakens an enchanting, multi-sensory urban atmosphere: the gentle hum of electric lanterns, the muffled murmur of night conversations drifting from behind wooden sliding doors, the appetite-arousing aromas of simmered dashi, roasted soy sauce, and charcoal smoke, and the soft, rhythmic click of footsteps echoing across wet stone in the cool evening air.

On the streets of Osaka, Japan. 1938
Four women stroll arm-in-arm down a sunlit street in Osaka in 1938, their backs turned to the camera as they navigate the urban pavement in crisp white tabi socks and lacquered wooden geta clogs. Each wears an expressive Meisen or patterned silk kimono tied with a distinct, boldly designed obi sash: a large plaid pattern paired with a grid obi on the far left, a swirling floral robe matched with a dynamic cartwheel (genroku-guruma) obi, a dark ensemble anchored by a wheel-and-floral motif, and an outer haori jacket trailing dynamic butterfly or bird silhouettes on the right. Modern streetlamps and concrete architecture frame their path, capturing a lively snapshot of pre-war metropolitan fashion. The photograph resonates with a vivid sensory atmosphere: the sharp, rhythmic clatter (karankoron) of wooden clogs striking smooth pavement, the crisp rustle of stiff silk weaves brushing together in motion, the low, warm murmur of laughter and conversation shared between companions, and the dry, lingering scent of starch, silk, and urban dust under an afternoon sun.

Captured in Osaka during the thirteenth year of the Showa era (1938), this street photograph offers a compelling window into the casual elegance of urban women during a transitional chapter of pre-war Japanese history. Osaka, Japan's bustling commercial and industrial powerhouse, was a vibrant center for the production, retail, and popular styling of meisen textiles—innovative, machine-spun silk garments produced using stencil-dyed warp and weft yarns (ikat or kasuri). Meisen offered young women an affordable, durable, and highly expressive canvas to embrace bold graphic motifs inspired by Western Art Deco, avant-garde geometry, and classical Japanese iconography.

A unicornfish from Raja Ampat, feeding on plankton in open water over a reef. I think this is a sleek unicornfish (Naso hexacanthus) but could be one of its relatives. #MarineLife #Wildlife 🐟🌿
An oval fish with a triangular tail. It has two sharp blades at the tail base. It is light blue, with a yellowish tail fin margin and belly. The lower and rear edges of the operculum are dark. The fish is pictured alone, against blue water, but is part of a much larger aggregation feeding over a reef.

A Tranquil Scene on Lake Ashi, Japan, with Mt Fuji in the background. Dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, this photograph was produced from glass-plate negatives by pioneering Japanese photographers such as Kusakabe Kimbei or T. Enami.
A serene, mirror-like expanse of Lake Ashi (Ashinoko) rests in quiet morning stillness, perfectly capturing the crisp reflection of a traditional flat-bottomed wooden sailboat (wasen) in the lower foreground. The vessel's rectangular cloth sail and long wooden steering oar (ro) reach into the glassy water, where two seated figures in dark garments navigate the gentle current. Low, luminous bands of morning mist drift across the dark, forested ridges of the surrounding Hakone caldera. Rising majestically in the central distance, the snow-dusted, symmetrical peak of Mount Fuji floats above the horizon, its base softly veiled by cloud layers. Captured on a Meiji-era albumen print, the scene glows with warm sepia and rich umber tones that evoke an atmospheric sensory experience: the profound silence of an early morning mountain lake, the faint drip of water off a wooden oar, the crisp chill of alpine air carrying the scent of damp cedar and pine, and the serene stillness before the sun fully clears the surrounding peaks. Dating from the late nineteenth or early twentieth century, this photograph belongs to the golden age of Meiji-era Yokohama-shashin (Yokohama souvenir photography), produced from glass-plate negatives by pioneering Japanese photographers such as Kusakabe Kimbei or T. Enami. Hakone was historically a pivotal mountain pass and barrier station (sekisho) along the famous Tōkaidō highway connecting Edo (Tokyo) with Kyoto. For centuries, travelers along the Tōkaidō paused on the shores of Lake Ashi to gaze across the water at Mount Fuji—a classic vista immortalized in ukiyo-e woodblock prints by masters such as Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige.
