Call for contributions to an essay cluster on the Reception of the Early Medieval Insular Church (c.300-1100) ed. by Dr Robyn Stewart & I for the journal postmedieval. Deadline for abstracts is 15 December 2026, with first full drafts due 01 November 2027. Please share! #medievalsky #skystorians
Call for contributions to an essay cluster with the journal postmedieval on The Reception of the Early Medieval Insular Church (c. 300-1100) edited by Robyn Stewart and Ellen Gallimore.

Proposals are invited for articles in any discipline of up to 8000 words on topics relating to religious medievalism in the reception and study of the early medieval Insular Church of Britain and Ireland. From the English Reformation onwards, the study of the early medieval Insular Church featured in heated debates about papal influence on the earliest Christians in Britain and Ireland. It cannot be overstated how integral the belief in an independent early medieval British Church was to Protestant scholars in Britain until the mid-nineteenth century.
Protestantism, with its perceived legacy stretching back to historic figures like Alfred the Great and the foundation of institutions like Parliament, formed a vital aspect of British national identity which was then exported around the world through colonialism. New Protestant outposts in North America, Australasia, Africa, and the Indian subcontinent were intrinsically tied to an early medieval legacy hiding in plain sight. The Thirty-Nine Articles of the Church of England essentially enshrined anti-Catholicism in popular British identity, which
was visible as much in the editing of early medieval texts as in anti-Irish hiring practices at home and abroad. Ireland’s own early medieval Church and scholastic missionaries present another challenge to national history, such as the development of national legends for its patron saints Patrick, Columba, and Brigid of Kildare.

Please submit abstracts of maximum 500 words and a short biography of maximum 150 words to Robyn Stewart (robyn.stewart@york.ac.uk) and Ellen Gallimore (ellen.gallimore@york.ac.uk) by no later than 15 December 2026. Accepted proposals would be notified in January 2027 with first drafts of full articles due by 01 November 2027.

One of my favourite medieval laws: Concerning vampires (strigis), which do not exist, no inquiry shall be made. From the early 12th-century Laws of King Coloman of Hungary, c.57.
The image shows Christopher Lee as Dracula, with blood on his lips and a victim in his arms. In the image, Dracula looks very troubled, perhaps because he’s just been told that he doesn’t exist by someone reading medieval Hungarian laws.

🧵 The record for Alicia Lewyne not only sheds light on life in the middle ages, it also reveals how people used accusations of homicide as a legal tool in other disputes, such as the dispute Alicia’s father had over land with Robert and Walter de Wylehale. Here’s there record⬇️

Late Call for Papers

Leeds International Medieval Congress, 6th-9th July 2026

Constructing Masculinities and Ideas of Manhood in the Premodern World

In their 2017 work on Scottish manhood, Professors Lynn Abrams and Elizabeth Ewan stated that ‘Men are everywhere in the narratives of Scotland’s past, but at the same time they are nowhere, or at least their gendered selves, roles and practices are less frequently interrogated than women’s.’ This claim is true for Scottish history as it is for histories across the premodern world. While the study of masculinities has become more popular in recent decades, investigating the gendered lives of premodern men remains understudied. This panel aims to reflect on gender as a relational social construction and masculinities as a category in the social and political realms of the premodern world.

Potential applicants are invited to send proposals for papers of 15-20 minutes. Paper topics may include (but are not limited to):

·       Masculinities and their change over time and lifecycles
·       Male gender as a trigger for class conflict
·       Ideals of masculine identity compared to lived experience
·       Literary depictions of masculinity, idealised and denigratory
·       Reflections of masculinity in visual and material culture
·       Male identity across race, religion, and geography
·       Masculinities and their intersections with queer and disability studies
·       Clerical and hagiographical masculinity
·       Non-conforming maleness

Applicants are invited to send an abstract of no more than 200 words, including a proposed title, short biography (including research interests and institution), 3-5 keywords and preference for in-person or virtual paper delivery. Please send this information to Nick Munn (n.l.munn@qmul.ac.uk) by Wednesday 20th May 2026, 17:00 BST (GMT+1).

If you require any further information or have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out!

Call for Papers! Fissures: Gender and Political Crisis #medievalsky #Fissures2026
Fissures: Gender and Political Crisis
17-18 September 2026
Pembroke College, University of Cambridge

Gendered work on medieval popular politics has tended to revolve around the exceptional. This workshop explores how studies of gender can reconfigure discourses of medieval political community. We ask how attending to gendered bodies and identities might help us better understand the fissures in political culture in medieval Europe. Marking, for example, women’s participation as either absent or rare confines their involvement to the historical margins. How did literary as well as non-literary texts from various genres, ranging from the thirteenth to the sixteenth centuries, engage with gendered political action? How did ideas of gender stabilise or destabilise political performances?

We invite abstracts for 25-minute papers, as well as expressions of interest for participation. We welcome papers with a historical, literary, or interdisciplinary focus. Potential topics could include but are not limited to:

•	Frameworks for understanding non-normative gender expressions in political spaces.
•	Studies of politics at the intersection of gendered, queer, or trans methodologies.
•	Histories of masculinities in political community.
•	Emotion and/or Affect
•	Weaponized/defensive gender
•	Manoeuvring bodies through political crisis
•	Inclusion and exclusion
•	Different sites of political discourse, such as domestic and non-violent conflict.

Collectively, the papers will interrogate the role of gender in political discourse. Selected papers may be considered for inclusion in an edited volume. Means-based bursaries for speakers may be available by further application.

Please submit a title and abstract of no more than 200 words to Alice Raw (ar889@cam.ac.uk) and Abbie Fray (abigail.fray@unibe.ch) by 16 January 2026.
