So I've had a speaker drop-out last minute from the session dedicated to Old Norse female networks and communities! I still need to figure out next steps but is there coincidentally anyone who'd like to present in this session? #MedievalSky #OldNorse

As both an academic and a writer, I am repelled by the "this looks like a long document. Would you like me to summarize it for you?" that seems to appear at the top of every pdf viewer now. NO. The *entire point* of good writing (either books or journal papers) is that every sentence has a purpose.

…I’ve seen the arc of the earth, From the Birsay shore, like the edge of a planet, And the lifeboat plunge through the Pentland Firth To a cosmic tide with the men that man it. —Robert Rendall, “Angle of Vision” from The Edinburgh Book of Twentieth-Century Scottish Poetry (EUP, 2005) #RNLI #poem
Angle of Vision
Robert Rendall

But, John, have you seen the world, said he,
Trains and tramcars and sixty-seaters,
Cities in lands across the sea –
Giotto’s tower and the dome of St Peter’s?

No, but I’ve seen the arc of the earth,
From the Birsay shore, like the edge of a planet,
And the lifeboat plunge through the Pentland Firth
To a cosmic tide with the men that man it.

It is mad that we have, somehow, allowed net zero - a policy common to all major parties under 5 years ago and supported by a majority of the public - to become a synoym for mad radicalism. It is doubly mad that we've allowed this to happen during the hottest summer on record.

It takes time to learn things. This isn't the Matrix, humans are not LLMs, you don't just upload knowledge into your brain. It comes with time and experience and, crucially, a chance for your brain to rest and process what it's learned.

I do find it interesting that centuries of paleo-Inuit presence in Greenland is often described as ephemeral whilst five hundred years of settlement by the Norse amounts to the "first true ‘ownership’ of Greenland in a formal sense". [Not trying to dunk on this article in particular]
