Hebrew Palaeography Question! Could anyone please help translate the inscription below, from the end leaves of a Latin Pocket Bible? The Latin inscription added afterwards shows the book was also owned by a Dominican friar, and the book is continental but was later in Oxford! 📖🔎

Well, that sums up early modern taxation. In 1543 the Edinburgh Hammermen made an expense entry of 'Item for ane stent to certane men that yed with the provest xvij s'. Some unknown men turned up with the provost and we had to pay.

#palaeography help please! I’m seeing ‘knokvarkm[ak]ar’ as in clockwork maker. The Ks are clear on the page - both forms found in other names, as is the terminal r (see Freser in first few entries, but the ‘va/wa’ part worries me. Any thoughts?

Ahh, the days before health and safety... In 1683 the Edinburgh Incorporation of Surgeons and Barbers were worried about the poor state of their convening house's roof. So they told their 'box master' (treasurer) to go up and have a look. You can never be too careful! Always best to check.

Help please! What should be 'James Johnesoun' looks decidedly like 'James Hohnesoun'? It is his 'upsat', or setting up payment, so it is probably some kind of phonetic rendering of Johnesoun (later deacon of the Hammermen Inc.), but does everyone else see 'Hohnesoun' here? #palaeography
