Does anyone know about the ambassador sent from Edinburgh (?) to Denmark c.28th March 1564? Apparently it was about some ships? The Edinburgh Hammermen record as tax to pay for it. @profmurdoch.bsky.social - any thoughts on who the ambassador might have been?

Fantastic - an inky fingerprint in the minutes of the Edinburgh Incorporation of Surgeons in the phenomenal archival collections of @rcsedlibandarchive.bsky.social . Is it contemporary to the 1687 entry? Did it belong to their scribe, Mr Patrick Mowbray? #SurgeonsProject

Aaron Allen @mchapelproject.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
Unfortunately no, but it certainly looks like it! Later on he gives ‘brering’ for bearing (of banners), do I’m thinking it’s ‘breraris’ for ‘bearers’? Carrying the drum certainly makes sense in the entry. Thank you for your help!

Help with #palaeography please! What is the word after for? It relates to a swasch, or drum, and was paid jointly between Hammermen and the Masons and Wrights: 'Item for [br aris?] to our awin squasche xxd our part xd'

Well, that sums up early modern taxation. In 1543 the Edinburgh Hammermen made an expense entry of 'Item for ane stent to certane men that yed with the provest xvij s'. Some unknown men turned up with the provost and we had to pay.
