Anyway, I'm having fun playing it! But if you are a fan of the first installment, I highly recommend pretending that this one is not related. Pretend you're playing a licensed AAA adaptation of the part of Inception where Elliot Page is bending a city into 90° angles for no reason.

New one is like somebody read the Wikipedia page about the first game and couldn't quite parse it. And had the assets folder handy but none of the design sense to move forward with it. Every character you meet is the most generic video game person, handing out tasks, distrusting you, thanking you.

The anomalous objects had so much style and just the right amount of humor. The puzzle or challenge associated with each one seemed uniquely inspired by the object. Jesse's journey from custodian to director of the agency was a sort of perfect Lynchian nonsense riddle. I love that game!

That first Control had a lot going for it. The place felt like a bad dream but with serious stakes, and Jesse was trapped there in a way that was scary. The characters all seemed appropriately freaked out to be in the situation, but also forced by their cloudy dream brains to keep doing their jobs.

Played some more. I guess what this is really like is Prototype or its lesser sibling inFAMOUS, nice big city, some fun transversal superpowers and a decent variety of brawl attacks, protagonist with zero personality except that he's kinda mopey.

Playing the new Control game. Having an intensely negative reaction to the writing! It throws out all of the tone & style built so carefully across first one. That was the stuff I liked! This seems like it will just be kind of a spider-man game with a Control theme pack installed?

Speaking of good TV shows, I think that Pluribus and Widow's Bay should be on here, even though they're both only one season in. In fact, if Widow's Bay stays this good for another season or two I might put it at #1 (where I currently think Succession or Veep ought to be).

Severe late-season fall-offs for GoT, HoC, Dexter, Stranger Things, and Hacks should knock them way down this list. Or even (excepting GoT) off of it. Heard so much shit talked about Galactica's final season that I never even started that show. And oof that last season of Hacks was excruciating
