The Journal of Experimental Biology chose our article to be highlighted for the current issue. Kathryn Knight wrote a delightful pop-sci piece accompanied by a fun illustration. journals.biologists.com/jeb/article/...

Speed, not hill running, is main factor in shin stress fractures
For runners, pain is sometimes part of the process. Achy muscles after a particularly long run or shin splints when your shoes need replacing can be a gentle warning to ease off. But take training too...

statement by UT Austin faculty, announcing a strike tomorrow in protest of the police presence on campus
Too long for alt text here's a summary: faculty members at UT Austin are condemning the university administration's decision to invite heavily armed city police and state troopers to the campus in response to a planned peaceful educational event by the Palestine Solidarity Committee. The event was meant to include teach-ins, study sessions, pizza, and an art workshop, with no threat of violence or disruption. The faculty members witnessed police using excessive force against students, including punching a female student, knocking over a legal observer, and violently arresting students for standing at the front of the crowd. They are calling for no business as usual on campus and are urging the community to gather at the main mall in front of UT Tower the following day.

Imagine delivering this mini-tirade as the opener to your conference talk. Feels like we used to let scientists have more fun... psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/194... #PsychSciSky #neuroskyence
In most psychological ivory towers
there will be found an animal labora-
tory. The scientists who live there
think of themselves as theoretical psy-
chologists, since they obviously have no
other rationalization to explain their ex-
travagantly paid and idyllic sinecures.
These theoretical psychologists have one
great advantage over those psychological
citizens who study men and women.
The theoreticians can subject their sub-
human animals, be they rats, dogs, or
monkeys, to more rigorous controls than
can ordinarily be exerted over human
beings. The obligation of the theoreti-
cal psychologist is to discover general
laws of behavior applicable to mice,
monkeys, and men. In this obligation
the .theoretical psychologist has often
failed. His deductions frequently have
had no generality beyond the species
which he has studied, and his laws have
been so limited that attempts to apply
them to man have resulted in confusion
rather than clarification. This paper was presented as the presiden-
tial address of the Midwestern Psychological
Association meetings in St. Paul, May 7, 1948.

Why is this not standard practice? Although probably better without anonymous reviews. Maybe? Thoughts? "In our open peer review model, we will publish the editorial decision letters, reviews (in anonymized form), and the authors' responses to the critiques along with the article." #BiomechSky

Posting a preprint has become the moment that feels meaningful. As in: Here it is, the piece I worked so hard on, for the public to read and discuss. The legacy publication process feels like a frustrating bureaucratic routine. I’m usually bored of the paper by the time it’s published.

Are highlights necessary in manuscripts? Do they increase the likelihood that someone will read the article? I guess I wonder what the utility is when the abstract is already a brief overview.

I was fairly certain that people were measuring PT moment arms using ultrasound and a dynamometer, but all easy to find references use MRI. Is this a thing or am I out to lunch? Thanks!
