History is written by the victors. Thatcher broke the power of trade unions by mass unemployment, industrial restructuring, frittered away N Sea Oil, laid the foundations for the current housing crisis, decimated local bus services, hollowed out local government and introduced the poll tax.
Simon Clarke

Andy Burnham seems to remember a different 1970s to the rest of us. Britain in 1979 was utterly broken - ravaged by unaccountable trade union power, economically stagnant, the sick man of Europe.
The 1980s saw a remarkable national recovery based on free enterprise, the rule of law and championing Western values. And it is this that our Prime Minister rails against...

Great to hear the PM say “We are going to be much prouder in standing up for our values and the rule of law” re foreign information warfare. I wonder if he or the Home Secretary might consider doing the same when it comes to masked vigilantes shutting down infrastructure and harassing the RNLI

The vast majority of our media has been complicit in normalising fascism - “gentle centrist celebrities” have told us not to overreact and now people who volunteer to save drowning children are in fear of their life (and I think of all those bullshit “free speech” comedians who’ve helped too)

If "legitimate concerns" were considered to excuse illegitimate methods, then nobody from Just Stop Oil or Palestine Action would have been arrested. So we know it doesn't. In fact that phrase is only ever used in one context. Only in that context is uniformed mob intimidation "peaceful protest"

You could say the same about any public service, or anything at all of public interest. The demands of capital owners trounce all other considerations, degrade the service and transform it into something with an entirely different purpose. UEFA's succinct critique of capital should be framed.

I made y'all a guide so you can decide whether to post your reply, inspired by @georgemonbiot.bsky.social.
A flowchart diagram outlining a decision-making process for replying online, featuring six yellow rounded rectangular boxes stacked vertically on the left. Each yellow box contains a question with an accompanying emoji: "Is the reply insulting or abusive? 🤬", "Is it performative idiocy? 🤡", "Does it make false accusations? ⚠️", "Is it pointless conflict? ⚔️", "Is it racist, sexist, or other forms of prejudice? 🏳️‍⚧️", and "Does it contribute meaningfully to the discourse? ⚖️". Answering "Yes" to any of the first five questions leads via black arrows directly to a red oval on the right side that reads "Don’t post! 🛑". Answering "No" moves down to the next question in sequence. For the final question, answering "No" also points to the red "Don’t post!" box, while answering "Yes" is the only path that leads to a green oval at the bottom right that reads "It’s safe to post, but consider not posting anyway! 🚦".

UK firms could lose out as
EU gets better tariff rates

By Holly Williams
Donald Trump's latest tariffs have raised fears that British exporters could lose out after the EU secured more favourable terms, although the President launched a scathing attack on the bloc.
The UK is facing a 10 per cent tariff that replaces an equivalent levy that expired yesterday, having been declared illegal by the US Supreme Court in February. The EU rate was reduced from 15 to 10 per cent.
William Bain, head of trade policy at the British Chambers of Commerce, said that, while it would be
"business as usual" for most British firms exporting to the US, the UK must continue negotiating with the
US over tariffs.
"There will be concerns about the loss of the UK's competitive advantage over the EU and other countries which have secured a more favour-able deal in other sectors," he added.
A government spokesperson said:
"The preferential access secured under our agreement with the United States remains in place."
Trump later accused the EU of viewing America as a "piggybank," and called for an investigation into practices such as fining US tech firms that he claimed were "robbing
American companies"
"The EU will pay a very big price for this illegal and highly unethical conduct," he said.

Prisons are full, but of the wrong people. While greedy polluters laugh at us from gilded boardrooms and fraudsters sunbathe on yachts, vulnerable people rot behind bars for being poor, for being addicts, for protesting injustice or for suffering poor mental health. That’s the root of overcrowding.
