How long does a butterfly live? 🦋 A few weeks for most, but pollen-eating Heliconius can live up to a year – and have much bigger brains. @ebablab.bsky.social from @camzoology.bsky.social is exploring how brains and behaviour can drive the evolution of new species 👉 bit.ly/4jFJJzG

A basic-basic-translational trifecta! A discovery in alga leads to a new technology that transforms both neuroscience research and leads to a brand new type of human therapy. I love that everyone in my feed is smiling this morning. Congrats, @deisseroth.bsky.social.

The answer to this question is a very loud and resounding NO. And neurobiologists don't just consider the notion of a "lizard brain" in humans misleading. It is wrong. Very wrong. The only lizard brain is that found within lizards. #neuroethology #neuroskyence www.theguardian.com/science/2026...
theguardian.com
Do humans really have a ‘lizard brain’ lurking beneath our rational minds?
It’s a powerful analogy that captured the popular imagination, but the biological reality is quite different

Universities cannot expect researchers to take risks if they are repeatedly at risk of redundancy while losing professional services support, grappling with the gratuitous vagaries of home and international student number swings and both teaching and assessing in an age of unregulated AI.

I'm excited to share our new preprint: Generation of a transgenic cephalopod tinyurl.com/pc86jxz8 Cephalopods (cuttlefish, octopus & squid) are crazy critters that dynamically camouflage to their surroundings by changing the color, pattern, & texture of their skin, which they control w their brain.

I cannot even begin to stress how important mentors have been for my career thus far, especially informal and/or peer mentorship. Sometimes mentoring is from your supervisor, or a formal programme, but more often it's a diffuse network of people in your corner. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Successful early-career scientists rely on network of mentors
Large networks are particularly beneficial to researchers in under-represented groups.
