First time I found an Argiope female next to her egg sac in the field. She must have laid it recently because they are known to stay with the egg sac for ~ one day. Egg sac guarding against parasites? The web around it might also help.

To my surprise, the wasp spider Argiope bruennichi is now abundant in the Black forest region in SW Germany. A climate change effect: these days summers are hot and winters much milder. The photo was taken at 800m altitude.

Carved animals (mammals) of all kinds under and above the seats in the 15th century choir stalls of St Pietro e Orso in Aosta, NW italy. Some are fighting, foraging, showing their bum. A lot to see for praying monks back then and for visitors today.

It's #NoMowMay! Who's giving the mower a rest this year?🌼
The image presents a comparison between two types of lawns to promote #NoMowMay. On top, titled "Why have a lawn like this?" it displays a grid of uniform green squares representing a plain, regularly mowed lawn. Below, titled "When you can have a lawn like this?" the grid intersperses colourful icons of a sunflower, a pink flower, a ladybug, a frog, a bee, a butterfly, a white flower with a yellow centre, a tulip, another sunflower, a red mushroom with white spots, and additional flowers, symbolising a lively, biodiverse lawn encouraged by letting grass grow naturally during May and beyond.

Spiders that experience vibrations, visual stimuli, both or none during development do not differ strongly in the size of their brain areas. This is a surprising finding. Even more surprising is that siblings react alike. See our new publication in the J. comp. Neurology. doi.org/10.1002/cne.... 🧪🕷
We performed an experiment with two spider species, one web building and one cursorial species. Juveniles experienced vibrations or visual input or both or no stimuli. Their brain areas did not differ significantly. However, siblings reacted in a similar way.

Dear Physicists and Physics fans, I would like to encourage you to celebrate #WomenInPhysics Day this Friday, November 7th. Why November 7th? Because it is the birthday of two of the most impactful women physicists of the 1900's: Marie Curie and Lise Meitner. 🎢 ⚛️ 🧪 👩‍🔬
WOMEN IN PHYSICS DAY!

In honor of the pioneering women in physics who broke down barriers to do what they love, we celebrate Women in Physics Day on November 7th, the birthdate of both Marie Curie and Lise Meitner.

Marie Skrodowska-Curie (1867-1934)

Radioactivity pioneer, two-time Nobel laureate

A giant of science, Marie Sktodowska-Curie conducted pioneering research on radioactivity, a term she coined. She discovered two elements, founded two medical research centres, won two Nobels, and invented mobile X-ray units (dubbed petites Curies), saving countless lives in World War

Lise Meitner (1878-1968) Nuclear physicist

When Lise Meitner was a teen, Austria restricted female higher education. She pursued physics anyway, and 25 years later became the first woman in Germany to hold a professorship in physics. She helped discover nuclear fission, but was contentiously not awarded the 1944 Nobel alongside collaborator Otto Hahn.
