Once again for those in the back (or apparently in upper echelons of some universities): Writing cannot be separated from thinking. Yes, “writing sentences from scratch” is necessary. Why do I feel some academics view writing like the stereotypical kid needing to eat their brussels sprouts.

"I think of it very much as a sort of member of my team," she said. "I really do feel that it's allowed me to focus more of my time and energy on what really matters, which is the ideas, the thinking ... rather than spending a lot of my time writing sentences from scratch."
