The world has made real progress in steering away from some of the darkest climate futures where global emissions doubled (or more) this century. But as David Wallace-Wells and I note in today's NYT, we are not out of the woods yet, and climate uncertainty is not our friend: www.nytimes.com/2026...

There are still big unknowns about solar geoengineering: Reflective has just released a road map of the studies & experiments needed to reduce that uncertainty — and make an "informed decision" about its use:

Here are some bugger-me facts from the lede
Extract from The Economist article: The 40m scheduled passenger flights which took place in 2019 added up to about 61bn kilometres of travel—exceeding the distance from Earth to the Sun every day of the year. More than 40% of those flights left contrails behind them for at least some of the journey as water vapour in the exhaust from their engines froze into tiny particles of ice.

Many of these trails were ephemeral. They streamed out behind their progenitor planes before fading quickly away. But over about 5% of the total distance flown—comfortably enough for ten round-trips a day to the Moon—they persisted and widened as water vapour already in the atmosphere joined in the freezing. Thin white lines became broad translucent stripes of cirrus cloud. Wind those stripes around Earth like yarn around a ball and you will find that, at any one time, persistent contrails cover maybe a thousandth of the sky. In doing so they warm the planet.

Globally, 84% of the heatwave days people were exposed to in 2020-24 would not have occurred without climate change. The rate of deaths associated with heat exposure increased by 23% from the 1990s, reaching 546,000 deaths annually. Look where people are dying. www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...
A figure containing two world maps stacked vertically, labeled "A" (top) and "B" (bottom). The entire image is captioned at the bottom: "Figure 2: Average percentage of total deaths that were heat-related in 1990–99 (A) and 2012–21 (B)".

A single color-coded legend on the left side applies to both maps, showing a gradient of 17 steps. The scale ranges from very pale cream/pink representing the lowest percentage ("0.00 to <0.25") to increasingly darker shades of orange, red, and finally dark maroon/black representing the highest percentage ("3.75 to 4.00"). Antarctica is shaded grey on both maps.

Map A (Top Map - 1990–99): Shows the global distribution of heat-related deaths as a percentage of total deaths during the 1990s. Most of North America, Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia are shaded in light cream or pale orange colors, indicating low percentages (generally below 1.00%). The highest percentages are concentrated in North Africa, parts of the Middle East, and parts of Central/Southern Africa, which are shaded in medium-to-dark red, with a couple of countries showing very dark maroon patches.

Map B (Bottom Map - 2012–21): Shows the same metric for the 2012–21 period. Compared to Map A, there is a visible and significant intensification of color globally, particularly across the African continent and the Middle East. A large, continuous block of countries across North Africa, West Africa, and the Middle East is now shaded in the darkest maroon and black tones, indicating that heat-related deaths make up the highest bracket of total deaths (up to 4.00%). Central and Southern Africa also display much darker shades of red and maroon compared to Map A, while South America (notably Argentina) and parts of South Asia show a slight darkening into deeper orange-red tones.
