Sir Ian McKellen orates 'The Stranger's Case' from 'Sir Thomas More' by Shakespeare about the Evil May Day xenophobic riot of 1517 in London. This passage was written 400 years ago, but times never change. Humanity refuses to change its unwarranted bias against 'others'.

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

The two had been guests of honor at the con the previous year. They left behind a whiteboard with porn of all three and a tally of how many times she cheated on him with both of them, and then later on drew a weird cuckporn comic and iirc poem explaining her side of the story.

The sanest possible explanation: one of the two leaders of the sole explicitly right wing furry convention - who were married - dumped her husband and kids overnight for a pair of perpetually scandal-embroiled Canadian alt right furry porn artists and ousted him from the con, which then collapsed.

The attitude that regulation is hard so we should lower standards and emphasise in service evaluations using ‘real world’ (i.e. likely biased, questionable quality) data isn’t one I’m excited about.

There’s an eerie parallel with the history of screening in the UK. In the second half of the twentieth century there was very little regulation around cancer screening and little to no evidence that it was doing more good than harm. It took a series of scandals to create enough impetus to fix this.

A major problem IMO is that statistical validation of an algorithm isn’t the same as showing that it’s viable in practice or improves use of NHS resources. Never mind whether it saves money, which is a very high bar and also a significant assumption in the NHS ten year plan.

On 9/11, someone in my family, who fought in the first Gulf War, asked me bewildered: ‘why do they hate us (Americans) so much?’ Dunno, it has got to be all the ‘freedom.’
struggle? Between 1955, when Bernardine Dohrn was 13 years old, and 1977, when Dohrn and Ayers were expelled from the Weather Underground in a fit of unavoidable leftist infighting, the United States murdered roughly two million people in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. It sprayed over 18,000,000 gallons of Agent Orange over Indochina, causing some 400,000 additional deaths and some 500,000 birth defects in children. In March 1968, the Mỹ Lai Massacre alone saw roughly 500 unarmed Vietnamese civilians—mainly women, children, and the elderly—executed by American forces. The CIA’s executed by American forces. The CIA’s Phoenix Program is conservatively credited with the assassination of over 20,000 people. In 1965 and ’66, the State Department provided kill lists to the Indonesian military, resulting in an anticommunist purge that produced some million bodies. In 1971, President Richard Nixon backed the Pakistani genocide in Bangladesh, selling arms to the perpetrators and blocking international action while mass rape and murder produced several million refugees and another million dead. The CIA overthrew the government of Chile, installing a dictator who killed around 3,000 dissidents and tortured thousands more; it coordinated with dictators in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Brazil to assassinate and disappear tens of thousands of left-wing dissidents.
