This is why it's such nonsense for anyone to say that with UBI, people will lose meaning. First, jobs aren't any source of meaning for many people with jobs. Second, the jobs people can't say no to are in the way of a getting a lot of meaningful work done. And third, the rich seem to find meaning.

Anything short of total and vocal condemnation of these far right thugs, and none of this bs about "understanding legitimate concerns" from Labour can at this stage only be seen as a tacit acceptance of their actions, which is exactly how the far right sees it and which ultimately emboldens them.

The take that UBI is bad because it would make us need government is bad. The same argument could be used against doing Social Security or Medicare if we didn't already have them. If everyone needs a government program, that's good for democracy and bad for politicians who threaten those programs.

In fact the entire food system has moved from warehousing towards logistics, creating a global just-in-time model that helps destabilise the system and will greatly accelerate any collapse. All the more reason for government intervention. But neoliberalism has made intervention taboo.

Instead, not only does the government individuate responsibility for a systemic problem, but successive governments have also privatised the response. They've relied on supermarket warehousing to fill any gaps. But the supermarkets don't do that any more. They've switched from stocks to flows.
