I'd long suspected my (now retired) hometown priest, an actual Father Joe, was a lib, then I ran into him at a No Kings protest carrying an anti-ICE sign lol

Just saw a godawful Tom Barrett ad, featuring his wife and kids (!!!), in which they all talk about how he's always turning off the lights, buying store brands, etc. It comes off as "I'M learning how to do more with less, and so should you, you peasants. You have no excuse."

This almost always consists of conservatives saying "people no longer trust your institution" after spending decades doing everything they can to destroy trust in the institution. True of the press, true of academia, true of public health.

Convincing young people that America is poor & no one can afford anything & everyone is living paycheck to paycheck & their economic future is doomed ... IS NOT GOING TO LEAD TO MORE PROGRESSIVE POLICY. People who feel anxious & under threat do not respond with openness & generosity! Look it up!

As someone who was in undergrad from 2015-2019 (never had Zoom school) and grad school from 2021-2022 (pre-ChatGPT), I sleep well knowing I won't be pushed out of the workforce as I age bc by the 2050s I'll be part of the vanishing minority of workers who can actually read and write

I know you're not allowed to say this during the current debate, but the reason the left dominates academics, art, comedy, and music is that the right has stupid, discredited ideas, they're not funny, and dull resentment does not make for good art. No grand conspiracy required.

interesting to me that as the administration treats democratic-voting states like conquered or occupied territories, you don’t have pundits demanding the president respect “half the country”

There is no ideology so righteous that it justifies deliberately & intentionally spreading incorrect facts. The left can not compete on *feelings* -- the right will always win that fight. The left's only hope is reason + results. You are not helping anything by demonizing people who say true things.

El-Sayed's theory of the electorate ("Voters love economic populism and despise perceived corruption") leaves things to be desired, but it runs circles around Stevens' ("It is 1992") which is one reason why I'm more bullish about him as a general election candidate

The Platner mess has exposed a very specific sub-tendency on the American socialist left: urbanites whose politics are defined by their hatred of their liberal neighbors, and channel that distaste into a condescending fetishization of rural/working-class male identity

If you want to make the world a better place, you (yes, you!) are going to need to sacrifice a little sometimes. You’re going to need to pay taxes, you’re going to need to turn the A/C down you’re going to need to be a little less comfortable sometimes. Anyone telling you otherwise is lying to you.

here is what i think: we're not consumers or spectators, we are participants with agency. you should not hope that democrats will do anything. you must work to force them to do the right thing. the odds are long, but we are far from the first americans to face long odds. we will win.

Self-proclaimed centrists, as a class, seem far more preoccupied, not to say obsessed, with the flawed attempts to do good on their left than they are with the open, naked, ugly determination to do evil on their right. I would just like them to grapple with that fact, a little bit, for once.

Also has to do with the extent to which competitive elections in the US are so insanely polarized and optimized. These elections are decided by the voters who pay the least attention to politics compared to the overall electorate. So pols dumb down their rhetoric to try to reach them.
