'Psychologizing, Authority, and Propaganda' now available open access here: doi.org/10.1017/epi..... I argue that in deciding whether to interpret others as engaging in good or bad faith epistemic practices, a great deal depends on the power they have. Let me know what you think!

Winston-Salem tenants are living in unsafe, unmaintained housing while landlords face little consequence for failing to make repairs. North Carolina cities like Durham and Greensboro have already passed stronger protections. It's time Winston-Salem does the same! actionnetwork.org/petitions/ho...

Failing to psychologize the powerful is often disastrous, while rampant dismissive psychologizing of ordinary individuals has a dark history that should not be overlooked.

In the paper, I take a different approach: I argue the permissibility of psychologizing depends on the authority an agent has. Those in powerful positions of formal authority (politicians, corporate officers, police, etc.) are not owed the same benefit of the doubt as those without this authority.

More specifically, when should we come up with an alternative psychological or other causal explanation for their behavior that conflicts with a person’s own avowed reasons? Philosophers, including @flowerree.bsky.social and Nick Smyth, have started to do some excellent work on these questions.

She uses her car for multiple grocery runs a week so she can feed her neighbors! Please donate anything you can to help Ms. Edith and, by extension, Healy towers! 🫶🏽

The title and the notion of conceptual recovery I lay out is inspired by my favorite Arendt passage:
Hannah Arendt's account of "pearl diving" in her essay on Walter Benjamin from pages 205-206 from her book Men in Dark Times.

I think there are some widespread implications for our understandings of nonsense, metasemantics, and metaphilosophy.
120
Matt Shields @mattbshields.bsky.social · 14/04/2026
We do not know what our future needs, ends, or purposes will be, and not all of them currently exist. Desert landscapes do not sit comfortably with a tolerant approach to our conceptual agency that encourages us to let a thousand flowers bloom based on our evolving needs/ends/purposes.
130
Matt Shields @mattbshields.bsky.social · 14/04/2026
Our very ability to conceptually engineer puts pressure on abandonment: insofar as we can revise and rebuild our concepts in ways that suit our needs/ends/purposes, then it is extremely difficult to permanently abandon any concept.
130
Matt Shields @mattbshields.bsky.social · 14/04/2026
But there’s an unrecognized tension between conceptual abandonment and another topic that’s received a lot of attention recently: conceptual engineering. This tension was missed by positivist and post-positivist philosophers, who were fans of both engineering and abandonment.

Matt Shields @mattbshields.bsky.social · 14/04/2026
I have a new paper coming out on conceptual abandonment: philpapers.org/rec/SHIDFP-2. Abandonment is a ubiquitous strategy in the history of philosophy – philosophers have advocated getting rid of folk psychological concepts, the concept of harm, the concept of democracy, among many others.

The bombing of Iran, the starving of Cuba, the waging of genocide in Palestine. It's time to let go of the idea the role of the US is to enforce a rules-based order, and instead recognize the incredible harm our country unleashes around the world, and take meaningful action to reduce it.

These cases aren't the focus of this discussion, but I do view them as compatible with what I'm trying to say for just the reasons you cite. I think there's very interesting work to be done on how they factor into this sort of picture and expanding on the notion of 'material conditions' I rely on.

I think we could also add historical examples of philosophers rationalizing the oppression and disenfranchisement of various groups and how those arguments have been regularly weaponized by governing authorities to implement those policies.

In pinning the resulting harms on false beliefs, we get the source of the problem wrong and we don’t identify the measures needed to address these harms: establishing a public good and institution that’s properly independent of the cannibalizing nature of the market.

Let journalists regulate themselves, so we can continue to reap profits and power from these institutions! Victor Pickard shows this in striking detail in his highly recommended Democracy Without Journalism?, and you find similar arguments from Robert McChesney, Edward Herman, among many others.

But what historical scholarship shows is that modern journalistic norms, especially around balance and objectivity, actually arose as a defensive measure by powerful, private owners of media to stop increased public oversight and public alternatives to for-profit media.

Matt Shields @mattbshields.bsky.social · 05/12/2025
The main case study concerns recent philosophical discussions of the balance norm in journalism. Most accounts assume the pernicious effects of this norm stem from journalists’ false beliefs about their profession.
