New paper. TLDR: Social power influence a person’s ability to establish the question under discussion in a conversation. Combining work in formal pragmatics, critical discourse analysis, and social epistemology can help us identify the mechanisms by which this happens. philpapers.org/rec/MALIIX

Great conference critically celebrating the 25th anniversary of UNSCR 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. The last panel included Norway's State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, who was questioned on whether being pragmatic in response to US attacks on human rights ultimately means being complicity.

It's hard not to feel a bit smug looking back at conversations with University Leadership in 2023 or so. They: "we need to hire a philosopher of AI", Me: "Why not a philosopher of fascism or inequality?" They took that as silly or something, since "obviously" AI is what EVERYTHING will be about.

Wanted to share a paper I have coming out, "On the Value of Changing Your Mind" (philpapers.org/rec/SHIOTV). I make the case that changing your mind (when it comes at a cost and in response to the evidence) is the best evidence we can have that an agent is committed to epistemic goods.

hey #philsky, if any of you are ECAP11 in Vienna next week then come and see the political epistemology symposium i'm in with catarina dutilh novaes and a bunch of excellent phd students it starts before 9am on thursday, but only *just* before, and i think it'll be worth it
The schedule for our symposium at ECAP 11, which is titled "Political Epistemology of Argumentation". It notes the time (Thursday 8.50 - 10.45) and place (Horsaal 5, University of Vienna).

The background is black and white photo of a busy Viennese wurstelstand at night. (There's another version of the poster with the ancient Athenian assembly, but I think this depicts the modern austrian public democratic forum).

The full schedule including speakers, talk titles, and times can be found in the first entry on this page:
