ND is wonderful. Barbara is generous with time to young people with publishing ambitions. I buy so many of their books, even though I could get galleys. They deserve all the support.

An amazingly stark example of how the US economy has broken: Zaslav clears nearly a *billion* dollars amid a CEO tenure where he made basically anything he touched worse, harmed multiple prestigious brands, led huge layoffs—but delivered a corrupt merger for shareholders. variety.com/2026/tv/news...

white evangelical Republicans whose experience of Catholicism is limited to people like JD Vance assumed that their allies on abortion would be their allies on everything and miscalculated so badly here. even the most conservative US bishops cannot function without their immigrant parishioners!

Anyway, a movie culture without the possibility of insane overpriced whiffs will be a less healthy movie culture, and I'll eat these words the day that I can say that David Ellison has taken at least three big creative gambles, but I'm not holding my breath. x

Warehouse Kawasaki was an arcade centre in Japan that sought to recreate the atmosphere of Kowloon Walled City. The entrance from the parking lot, however, showed the influence of Kowloon's Gate rather than the historical Walled City. The arcade closed in 2019 and was demolished the next year.

My third novel, HERO COME HOME, officially has a cover! Preorderable from the usual places us.macmillan.com/books/978125...
The cover of my third novel, HERO COME HOME. Four human figures centred, the main image being that of a bearded man looking back over his shoulder (that's Oro, the protagonist), with a circle of symbols behind him. We can see a swan and a key. In the foreground are three people: two women, one with a mysterious marking? scar? who knows!? on her cheek and the other carrying a sword, flanking an older, balding man holding up a pistol. The possibly-scarred woman looks ever so slightly amused, and that is certainly very like her. Everybody else is not happy to be here, or indeed, anywhere

It's very funny to me that Disney has no idea what to do with this franchise. Fans of "classic" Star Wars stuff are an ever-dwindling audience base, and every new thing they have tried has been met with massive resistance by those same fans. They paid $4 billion for a lose/lose.

Roger Ebert was great "Oh, but he said this thing that didn't hold up-" Roger Ebert reviewed well over 7,500 movies, and that doesn't take into account his other writings about various film and film-related things. Of course he said a few dumb things. He also wrote Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.

We are literally all living in little algorithm-tailored bubbles. Something many of us fail to realize is that just because WE see a news clip or song or hot take everywhere, doesn't mean everyone does. Our media and news is highly tailored. There aren't just 4 channels anymore.
