Naomi Alderman’s new book The Strangers is an absolute knockout. An autofiction about her mother’s death and multiple pregnancy loss, framed by a sci-fi novel about the arrival of mysterious creatures called mimmoths. Aren’t we lucky to have Naomi Alderman?
The cover of The Strangers by Naomi Alderman. A series of neat suburban back gardens, and underneath there’s an eerie root system.

I'm actually unsure of what system Croatia are using at the back. It seems to be neither man marking NOR zonal. Maybe the red kits are hard to see against the grass? #CROENG

With every daft Reform policy, ask yourself "will this put more money in my pocket/make my life better/help more people/improve productivity?" When you do, you'll see that it is all just performative nonsense.

This is true. I had a college friend who was brought up in a very (white) male environment and he would say all kinds of unpleasant things and I called him out on it and honestly, it made a difference. Spending more time with women and a gay guy also moved the needle for the better.

The debate around the future of women’s prisons is intensifying. Calls for alternatives focus on support and rehabilitation rather than incarceration

I can't ever erase the image of that boy that drowned in the med. The way his body was on the beach reminded me of my similarly aged (at the time) son when he slept. I think so many forget these are desperate people.

One firm rule we always had, and I appreciate that, with both of us working, that we were able to, was never say no to when the kids wanted books. Whatever the genre.

So...no one was able to articulate the net benefit of migration and now, as with Brexit, it affects everyone. I can't wait for them all to elect f**King Farage so we can not learn anything for a THIRD time in a row, while we hope that British exceptionalism is actually tangible and not fantasy.

I think what really rankles is...what is the point of this argument? Will it put more money in your pocket? Does it solve the climate crisis? Does it improve productivity or create jobs? It's painting roundabouts or tying flags to lampposts.

I remember a few years ago seeing some football fans and the dad was pissed up with his mates and the only way the boy could get his attention was by singing racist songs. It was supersad. I can't work out if this is worse. Imagine bringing kids up this way.

Brilliant, fascinating article about the relationship between a drug addict and the drug dealers who cuckooed his home: www.theguardian.com/news/ng-inte...

A tale of two trap houses: being cuckooed ruined my friend’s life – but did it then help save him?
The long read: Drug gangs have moved off Britain’s streets and into vulnerable people’s homes. Addicts like my friend are easy targets, but the reality can be more complicated than it seems
