I know there's so much more nuance and complexity to it than this. But when a bad thing happens, and I see people say "see, dependencies are bad" I cannot help myself from interpreting it as "we should not work together on shared solutions" and I dunno it just makes me very sad especially lately

Found this jacket. Got it as a speaker gift for a Twitter conference. There were quite a few attempts to "acquire" my handle, including one that caused quite a bit of drama. I suppose someone will eventually get it now that it's abandoned. But the jacket (I never wear) is mine forever.

I get the objections to it, I really do. But I cannot tell you how many times I have explained why you cannot await a property assignment in Swift, and had to then go on to cover the alternatives and all their trade-offs. Not wonderful.

I think the Gates essay on AI is worth your time. I suspect/fear we will look back on this as wishful. But nonetheless, I am heartened to hear powerful voices like this, independent of how you feel about them personally, and I think it is a good sign.

It is very tempting to think we are simply in a transitionary phase. Eventually we will come out the other end and AI will just be a normal part of a functioning society. I want to believe this too and am trying hard to find evidence it could be true. If you have some, please share.

A persistent complaint about Swift's concurrency system is that it keeps changing. And yes, lots of new features have been added. But aside from back-and-forth in one very specific area (and now settled with NonisolatedNonsendingByDefault), the programming model has really remained unchanged.

It is entirely conceivable to me that ATProto "wins" the technical battle, Mastodon "wins" its ideological battle, and most users end up back on X, Threads, or Instagram. There's this anti-social quality to it all that is truly poetic. And horrible.
