Wrote up some thoughts on the role of LLM contributions in open-source projects.

Open source is social – and LLM generated PRs are antisocial
Recently there's been a lot of debate on the role of LLMs in open source software. Let's try a thought experiment. If the value of code is now zero - what's the value of a pull request to an open source project? (I realize I've immediately touched on a contentious debate - but stick with me for the sake of argument.)

I read it a long time ago, but I still think about The Innovator's Solution frequently. The realization that it is common to have a shallow and possibly plain incorrect understanding of why your product is successful is such an amazing insight.

But I do want to stress that I'm really appreciative that you shared it, including the accompanying social post that prompted me to look. It was a great exercise, and super cool to see. I rarely have a reason to look at something of that nature so closely.

But it was clear to me that understandability was a non-goal. It felt deeply inhuman, uncomfortably so. The uncanny valley of code.

Absolutely! I recently looked at a generated project that was tackling a very tricky problem. And I immediately looked at the (many) tests to get a better idea of how this was being validated. I was unable to understand them and would have had to put in serious work to do so.

I had this idea of "cognitive forces". I dunno if it makes sense or not, but I was unable to let it go. Yes, it's about AI and yes, I'm rolling my eyes at myself too.

Cognitive Forces
There was a time when human understanding was a necessary part of creating, but have the economics of this changed?

Sure yes. But I think you are underestimating here how much of a factor loss aversion is here and how quickly it generalizes

Very common for power supplies to be dual voltage. Perhaps that explains it?

Matt Massicotte @massicotte.org · 29/09/2026
I know there's so much more nuance and complexity to it than this. But when a bad thing happens, and I see people say "see, dependencies are bad" I cannot help myself from interpreting it as "we should not work together on shared solutions" and I dunno it just makes me very sad especially lately

I really want to play the game on the fake Ikea TV
Picture of a display IKEA TV. There is a print of a video game scene on it. A woman with her back turned, holding a sword, is looking out into a dimly-lit forest. Several hovering stones with glowing tunic symbols surround her.

I unfollowed all blue checks, and have done so a few additional times. But other than that, I have just left as a way for others to find me elsewhere.

Ooo yeah that's a good one. I did get a bunch of offers but buying/selling handles was explicitly against Twitter's terms and I was an employee (would not have sold regardless, which really pissed off many people)

Found this jacket. Got it as a speaker gift for a Twitter conference. There were quite a few attempts to "acquire" my handle, including one that caused quite a bit of drama. I suppose someone will eventually get it now that it's abandoned. But the jacket (I never wear) is mine forever.

I get the objections to it, I really do. But I cannot tell you how many times I have explained why you cannot await a property assignment in Swift, and had to then go on to cover the alternatives and all their trade-offs. Not wonderful.

I also don't understand. But I *think* it is a AI system that uses a fundamentally non-text interface. This concept promises much higher efficiency for some kinds of tasks. (Again if I get it, which is unsure)

I am too! But in my view many of the societal issues here a) are happening and b) will get much worse even if we are at a hard capability ceiling.

Matt Massicotte @massicotte.org · 21/09/2026
I think it's probably still good to proceed as though this is happening, even if you do not believe it. Because the mitigations seem very hard/impossible and a head start doesn't sound bad to me.

Matt Massicotte @massicotte.org · 21/09/2026
Totally agree on the general idea here. (I also am unfamiliar with a bunch of these specifics, so more research required!)

I think the Gates essay on AI is worth your time. I suspect/fear we will look back on this as wishful. But nonetheless, I am heartened to hear powerful voices like this, independent of how you feel about them personally, and I think it is a good sign.

Thanks for sharing this! I'm not sure I agree with the (implied) premise that it is even possible for these kinds of systems to be used and controlled in a way that is productive in the long term. But putting that aside, I am also on board here.

Having played and enjoyed 3, I'm not sure I would do another. There's so many games out there, and I want to experience them all! (But I'm still really glad I played it and could also see myself getting tempted again one day)
