We learned a lot and developed a lot of skills fighting for this legislation. Now that it's law we can apply those skills to other fights. Celebrate. Recover. Find the next fight.

5. Finally, the new law that passed is great, but it's not perfect! For example, there could be stronger protections for authors themselves. Furthermore, there will be flaws in the law that we won't see until it's been on the books for a few years. So, there will be more here.

4. Uplift the authors and communities that are the most frequent targets of book bans. Keep an eye out for banned books drives. Fill Little Free Libraries with them. Check them out from libraries. Buy them from indie bookstores. Read them to the young people in your life.

3. If you've got time & energy, adopt another district where there's a right to read fight (There are plenty of them!). Connect with organizations already doing the work to find out what they need.

What's next for Right to Read activists in Mass? Well, you could adopt one of the districts represented by someone who sponsored federal book banning legislation. Donate. Volunteer. Maybe you have friends or family in one of these districts you can connect with.

This is why we need the MA Freedom to Read bill passed. Someone in Falmouth bragging about getting Let's Talk About It - an educational TEEN comic - moved to adult, and admitting to misusing library collections, because they're prudes and bigots. This shouldn't be possible. @massaabb.bsky.social
Screenshot of a tweet from "Deedee"

We got "Let's Talk About It" moved from the YA section to the adult section in Falmouth MA.
Although it's still in the YA throughout other Cape Libraries.
We may or may not be holding a few copies hostage. 😉
(YA was defined as "middle-school and up.")
