Cetacea
Digital Drawing. An early whale (Pakicetus) stands at the water's edge, bending down for a drink. Behind it is a wall of tall grasses/reeds. The entire scene is shown within the shape of a blue whale. Despite the vast gulf in form and time between the two animals, they are of the same group: Cetacea.

#fossilfriday On Wednesday I (remotely) presented some of what I've learned in a decade of acid preparation of little Oligocene whales from the Pacific Northwest. Here's a time series of a concretion with a partial baleen whale skull, from July 2025 to February 2026:
A partial baleen whale skull in a concretion after successive stages of acid preparation, photographed between baths. Clockwise from upper left: July 25, 2025 - the tympanic bulla is visible, barely protruding from a large, roundish boulder. October 7, 2025 - about 2 cm of rock has been removed, and bone now protrudes 2 cm beyond the rock. November 6, 2025 - same, but the bone now protrudes 3 cm. Dec 20, 2025 - most of the skull is now exposed, and rock remains only within the crevices. February 19, 2026 - all calcium carbonate is now gone from all voides and the earbones have been removed from the skull, now free of cemented matrix.

I had wanted to try and finish this for today's #SundayFishSketch, but alas, that did not happen. So here is a work in progress of some Chinese Paddlefish 🐡
An illustration of three Chinese Paddlefish swimming in the Yangtze River. Hints of blue sky can be seen through the turquoise water surface. The river bottom is silty and sloping downward. This is still a work in progress, so the paddlefish don't have a lot of detail yet, but the viewer can see the basic colors. They are a darker gray on top, and fade to a cream/white on their bellies. Two of the fish are swimming closer to the river bottom, and one is swimming above them, almost in silhouette along the light of the water surface.
