Grasshopper Figure carved hematite c. 1800-1700 BC Old Babylonian culture Babylon #handmade #carved #hematite #grasshopper #art #sculpture #ancientsculpture #ancientart #Babylonia #culture #Babylon #EuphratesRiver #nature #beauty #ancientBabylonia #fertility #omen #astrology #locusts #foodsource
In ancient Babylonia and the broader Mesopotamian culture, grasshoppers (and their swarming phase, locusts) held a multi-layered, dual meaning. They represented both a positive symbol of fertility and abundance and a destructive force of nature used in divination and dietary sustenance.
In their solitary, non-destructive form, grasshoppers were viewed by Babylonians as symbols of the natural cycle, fertility, and abundance. Because they appeared in large numbers during agricultural cycles, they were tied to the life-giving forces of the earth.
This famous example is a beautifully detailed, nearly 4,000-year-old Babylonian stone weight carved from hematite in the shape of a grasshopper (c. 1800–1700 BCE). Used in markets for fair trade transactions, the grasshopper shape on the weight likely invoked blessings of agricultural prosperity and nature.
When solitary grasshoppers crowded together and transformed into swarming locusts, their meaning shifted drastically. To the Babylonians, a locust swarm was a catastrophic event that could strip fields bare and cause widespread famine.
Babylonians were deeply invested in astrology and divination. Grasshopper and locust behavior was carefully documented in cuneiform omen series (such as the Šumma Ālu). A swarm of grasshoppers appearing in a specific city or flying in a particular direction was interpreted as a direct message or warning from the gods, usually predicting economic ruin, military invasion, or divine displeasure.
Despite the threat they posed to crops, grasshoppers were heavily utilized by Babylonians in daily practical life.
Babylonians actively harvested locusts and grasshoppers for food. Cuneiform records show that mass amounts of these insects were caught, preserved in brine, and transported over hundreds of kilometers to be eaten as a protein-rich delicacy or everyday staple.

There are up to 8,000 species of katydids in family Tettigoniidae, 255 in North America alone. But this hot pink katydid isn't some exotic species, it's a 'morph', a normal genetic color variant. Here's the weird part: this is the DOMINANT color gene in katydids. (📷: Audubon Zoo)
From Audubon Insectarium article (it's behind a paywall), a vibrantly pink katydid, probably fresh from molting, sitting on broad green leaves.

Fabulous fragment of an ancient Egyptian wall relief with three bears and an oil jar. The paint has survived some 4,500 years! Limestone relief from the Pyramid Temple of Sahure, Old Kingdom, 5th Dynasty, c. 2496-2483 BC. Neues Museum, Berlin 📷 by me #ReliefWednesday #Archaeology
My photo shows a circa 4,500-year-old limestone relief with some well-preserved paint in places, from the funerary temple of Sahure at Abusir, measuring 39 × 35 × 8.5 cm. It shows three bears (partial view only) and a tall one-handled pottery vessel, across two registers. The upper register at left, shows the two leds and hindquarters of a bear, and at right, a bear’s lowered head, chest, and foreleg, painted mid-brown. The lower register at left shows a tall, dark-reddish-brown pottery vessel with a long neck and single handle, and at right, the lowered head, neck, shoulder, and top of foreleg of a dark-brown bear. The bears wear collars tethered by ropes to looped fixtures in the ground. The fragment comes from a wall scene depicting tributes from the Levant. Bears were not native to Egypt. The bears represented are Syrian brown bears (Ursus arctos syriacus), which were quite common in Levantine mountain regions in antiquity. They were kept as exotic animals in enclosures by Egyptian kings, and also hunted.

Vintage Japanese Obi design art. Painting 1940’s, Japan. Yorke Antique Textiles
Unfolding across a vertical paper canvas, lush, stylized blossoms featuring pristine white outer petals and intense vermilion-red centers burst forth against a deep forest-green ground. Delicate, textured golden stamens dot the heart of each flower, while slender, arching blades of emerald grass sweep dynamically across the composition. A textured diagonal swath of antiqued gold wash glimmers beneath the foliage, sprinkled with small, luminous white dew drops that sparkle like liquid pearls. The vibrant contrast between velvety green shadows, warm metallic undertones, and saturated reds and whites creates a tactile, sensory atmosphere, evoking the cool freshness of a dew-laden morning garden.
Created in 1940s Japan, this painted paper work is an original zuan (textile design render)—a hand-painted pattern template crafted specifically to guide the production of a luxury silk obi (kimono sash). During the Mid-Shōwa period, skilled textile designers (zuan-shi) synthesized classical Nihonga painting techniques with modern graphic boldings to instruct master weavers and yūzen dyers. The grand peony motif, long celebrated as a symbol of nobility, prosperity, and springtime vigor, is here reimagined with dramatic mid-century clarity. Such design renders embody the essential first stage of Japanese textile monozukuri (artisanal mastery), translating fine art draftsmanship into technical instructions for weaving and dyeing raw silk into wearable art.
