Huge. Huge testament to the power of organising. Huge relief for Exeter friends and colleagues. Huge waste of time and resources. Huge reputational damage done. Huge warning to universities who want to treat their staff like they don’t matter.

The University of Exeter has confirmed that it won’t proceed with compulsory redundancies “at this time”. This means colleagues do not need to complete the pro forma, and there will be no selection process.

A victory of sorts. We may have lost around 100 colleagues, who left ‘voluntarily’, but no one was sacked, our ballot closes on Wednesday and not all our conditions have been met (eg workloads), and we are in a very different place as staff and Union. Time to #ReclaimExeterUni @ucu.org.uk

84% of staff and research students at Sheffield Uni vote no confidence in the current leadership. This is no surprise after years of upheaval, lack of direction and “change” for the sake of change. Nobody, least of all the VC, knows what he’s doing or why. @sheffielducu.bsky.social

Great to see the Guardian champion the SHAPE (Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences) subjects, but this piece gives impression that they are expensive, whereas many are 'cheap to teach' subjects subsidising more expensive subjects, mainly in STEM and medicine. The crisis demands better understanding.

Sorry! Not on here last week. There are legitimate reasons why less than 1.0 FTE jobs might be advertised (job share, partial buyout, etc). But 0.9 is quite rare and could mean they are trying to get full time hours for cheap. We are seeing lots of employers doing this kinda stuff unfortunately

Incredibly shortsighted. And for Japanese studies too - hugely important culturally and economically now, but this is also a department that was established over 60 years ago as THE national center for Japanese studies. Literally destroying the infrastructure that made the UK relevant in the world.

Well, let’s just say he hasn’t deigned to actually meet with the formally recognized representatives of his staff for [insert implausibly long period of time and then double it] so it’s not entirely clear what he even knows about what is happening in the institution he purports to lead.

50% cut in Chinese studies. Almost 40% in Japanese studies. No justification was deemed necessary by university management for these figures other than “cuts need to happen”. Worth noting that we continue to break even in East Asian studies, so it’s not even financial.

This is precisely why it is wrong to frame Higher Education funding as a “middle class kids” issue. It’s a self fulfilling prophecy. With every course closure, it becomes more and more true as it rebuilds barriers to University that were only recently torn down.

But it seems some people are not required to replace teaching at all, and those of us having redundancy consultations are being paid for that day. The university claims they can withhold pay a second time as they do not accept partial performance. But they are, on some days and for some staff.

Sheffield staff who took strike action are being locked out again next week for refusing to replace teaching lost to the strike. But in a strange twist, next week is still a teaching week for us. So management’s brilliant actions have knocked out another week of teaching for no reason.
