An approach aimed at reducing carbon emissions, though, is strongly enhanced by the use of materials with low or negative embodied energy (yes, timber).

The use of a material is not enough to guarantee a truly ecological approach. Factors as production, transport, embodied and operational energy, maintenance etc. matter as well.

I'm pro Rejoin as I was pro Remain. It seems Burnham has the courage to tell the truth to the people, i.e. that Brexit didn't work. The courage that Starmer and, even more so, Corbyn lacked. Above all, though, he must avoid a second so divisive national fracture. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

It’s remarkable how many people can move on a street when those people don’t feel the need to always take a massive car with them. Mobility in cities is about space.
Busy European street with buses filled with people in a long line of people on bikes, waiting for the light to change in a separated, protected bike lane. Imagine if all those people or each in a separate car.

Pleased to have a note on The Sea Ranch in this week’s Punch List Architecture Newsletter alongside a great interview with Sekou Cooke www.punchlistmag.com/p/the-educat...
On the Sea Ranch front, Alexander Luckmann, whose recent Architect's Newspaper essay. on Ungers we linked to two weeks ago, sent along this usefully contrarian view on the development and its origins: "To me, the really interesting aspect of The Sea Ranch has always been the impossibility of realizing its utopian vision within its actual status: a developer's project that had to make money. It's a series of paradoxes: A sustainable, ecological way of living-as long as you drive three hours from San Francisco. A democratic, middle-income community-of second homes (I have a hard time believing anyone, except maybe Boeke, actually thought this was achievable). A development that kept the land free from building-but wanted to privatize the beach (it remains my opinion that TSR's most valuable legacy is inadvertent: public beaches throughout the state). The old narrative of Sea Ranch as a beautiful project that got ruined later when money became all-important is either blind or willfully blind; it was always going to be that way."

Yes- I've thought about this countless times, and it just doesn't make any (rational, conventional) sense. It would have cost perhaps just a bit more, with a little more effort, to deliver the sculptures to the Met and garner goodwill, but he chose to destroy them instead. A taste of things to come

As recounted in a NY Times article at the time, in 1980, Trump promised to rescue the graceful facade sculptures and give them to the Met Museum to preserve for posterity. Yet he inexplicably reneged on his promise & instead had the sculptures "smashed by jackhammers," as the Times article reported

I'm just a lowly art historian, but in moments like these I always think back to one early sign of Trump's wanton, pointless destructiveness: his demolition of the priceless & irreplaceable Art Deco relief sculptures on facade of the Bonwit Teller building, which he tore down to build Trump Tower
