There’s a very, very long history of pitting Black men and white women against each other in the U.S. to breakdown solidarity. Whenever we talk about ending mass incarceration of Black men, conservatives say it’s sexist to not punish rapists to the full extent of the law.

Four days ago, a scientist was surprised by the news that Anthropic discovered new virus genes for making DNA. He says he’s been studying them for years—and feeding his data to Anthropic’s AI as part of his own research. Coincidence? Here’s my story. nyti.ms/3VSWayc

What are people's experiences dressing more casually as a woman vs a man in academia as you get more senior? I thought that one of the advantages of working in academia is you can dress however you like (unless your work is patient-facing).

Currently finalising an article with a biography. Shocked to see that in proof setting, the editor, 'for clarity', changed my dead husband to a 'wife' - I've had to fix it back in the proof. The biography even notes I'm LGBT+ - they apparently don't believe two men can be parents. #LGBTSTEM #GayDad
David Smith was educated at the University of Oxford, carried out postdoctoral research at ETH Zurich and has been an academic at University of York since 1999. In recognition of his research team's work on LMWG hydrogels, he was awarded the prestigious RSC ‘Tilden Prize’. He also received the SCI ‘Science for Society Award’ for chemical education and outreach. Dave has engaged widely on wide-ranging aspects of inclusion and diversity, being named on Attitude Magazine's ‘101 List’ of influential LGBT + figures (2026). Since the death of his wife (they changed this from husband - I have had to change it back) in 2019, Dave has worked part-time and is a single parent to their son.

🚨DR UK's Statement on the EHRC's New Code of Practice "We are appalled at implications that an adequate workaround is trans people using Disabled toilets instead. We will not be used as a loophole in the wider erosion of trans rights." Full statement👇 www.disabilityrightsuk.org/news/disabil...
Disability Rights UK’s Statement on the EHRC’s New Code of Practice
As the makers of the original RADAR key and custodian of the National Key Scheme, Disability Rights UK issues our unequivocal solidarity with trans people, who should not be forced to choose between risking harassment in public facilities – or not using them at all.
Image of Disability Rights UK logo in a purple box.
We are appalled at implications from the Code that an adequate workaround is trans people using Disabled toilets instead. It is a vain attempt to get two marginalised groups to blame one another for our lack of facilities, when the blame lies firmly at the feet of policymakers. We will not fall for it. We will not be used as a ‘loophole’ in the wider erosion of trans rights.
Image of Disability Rights UK logo in a purple box.
Our RADAR key scheme began in 1981, rooted in the understanding that accessible facilities can be the difference between living the lives we deserve – socialising, travelling and working – and complete social exclusion.

Our community knows how it feels to be scapegoated simply for trying to access the necessities we need to live. Trans rights do not come at the expense of Disabled, nor anyone else’s.
Image of Disability Rights UK logo in a purple box.
As is clear from this Code of Practice, it sets a dangerous precedent for the erosion of other protected characteristics. If the Equality Act can be up for debate in this arena, who is to say this will not be the case when it comes to disability in the near future?

As a result, the Disabled-led movement must make a clear stand against this ruling, not to mention because 52% of trans people are Disabled themselves.

The judgement is damning of the bias / predetermined attitudes of OfS staff esp. Ahmed, also the resulting OfS investigation & report. Hard to see how they can continue in their roles, the OfS either needs a complete overhaul or be disbanded. Ironically they’ve just been given more draconian powers.
409. The work of the investigation team after 15 October 2024 (the date that Dr Ahmed joined the
investigation team) was undermined by the bias and predetermination of Dr Ahmed. He had expressed
his unequivocal support for Professor Stock and, critically, had made it clear that he thought the
University had failed to support Professor Stock and failed to uphold academic freedom (see the
passages underlined above). That Dr Ahmed was conflicted and should not be involved in the
investigation had been accepted by the OfS, including by Ms Lapworth, until October 2024. Indeed Dr
Ahmed himself had taken that view when first appointed. Despite this, Dr Ahmed was the person who
prepared the FD documents, which only contained one option, and which were then accepted by the
 USCEC.
 410. The evidence shows that, far from the USCEC being hermetically sealed from Ms Lapworth and the
investigation team, including Dr Ahmed, both of them were in the room when the decision was made
by the USCEC and they had a very high degree of influence over the decision.
 411. The Ofs's closed mind is further demonstrated by their refusal to consider whether there was
compliance at the date of the FD, by refusing to have regard to the 2024 Policy Statement or FOSCOP
 (Ground 3A and Ground 5A).
Ms Carss-Frisk went through the history of the investigation and decision-making to show that there
had been no bias or predetermination. Prior to the events of October 2021 at the University, the board
of the OfS had given a steer that the OfS should use its powers to take enforcement action in relation to
freedom of speech and academic freedom in a targeted way, as stated above at paragraph 366. Following
