Its extremely popular among leftists to assume that being into AI, or anything they don't like, is "male coded," so anyone "too" into it can be degendered and attacked. Banking on the fact that masculinity is viewed as inherently bad, so anything associated with it can be attacked.

These people are not AI skeptics, they're AI denialists. They're having a Luddite-flavored temper tantrum and dressing it up with concepts from philosophy and sociology that sound substantial enough to be impressive but are insubstantial enough that they can never be pinned down to testable claims.

LLMs have real and meaningful weaknesses and dangers associated with their use, which is part of why it's so galling that the loudest anti-LLM voices have less than zero interest in understanding what LLMs are good at and what they are bad at so they can make their case coherently.

Especially when it leaves capitalists claiming ambition as their exclusive property. They get to promise transformation, the left gets cast as the person explaining why you shouldn’t want things. What a fucking surrender.

A left that could say “the future could be magnificent, and you deserve a share of it” was offering something people could want. Losing that voice to endless fights over whether wanting the future was itself morally suspect was a hell of a loss.

Data centers are pretty normal light industry with some good things about them and some bad things about them. In some places they’re a good deal for people living nearby. In other places, they are not. Follow this account for more scorching hot takes that leave no sacred cow ungored.

It still boggles my mind that the main legal response to a technology that could fundamentally change society in many different ways remains an archaic publisher's right from the 18th century.

The study that finds data centers are a "top 10 water user" also finds that (at the time) they used 0.1% of America's water. It can both be the case that an industry is a top 10 water user, and it's responsible for 1/1000th of our water consumption. Misleading framing

I’ll say it; I think this is bad. I think there’s growing pressure to talk about AI in this kind of coded language that destroys understanding, rather than facilitating it. People want you to recite a list of its supposed weaknesses as a reassurance for themselves, not to inform others.

AI is getting cheaper more quickly than any other transformative tech in history. At a given level of performance, cost has fallen ~47%/quarter since 2023. That’s 4× faster than DNA sequencing, 6× faster than compute, 18× faster than lithium batteries, and (up to 1973) 54× faster than electricity.

Any lesson I have for dealing with the times we live is really just boils down to: never let the censorialists of the reactionary left, right, or center stop you from becoming new.
The promise of the Enlightenment is nothing less than universal emancipation, and the glory of the radical tradition is the Promethean project of making of ourselves whatever we will, be it orthodox humans or experimental transhumans. Solidarity in all forms of emancipation.

I realized yesterday: the two major sides of the AI debate aren’t “it’s good” versus “it’s bad.” They are “this is strange and uncertain” versus “there’s nothing to see here, you dolts.” Antis often get mad at the suggestion it’s very bad, because embedded within that is the claim it is novel.

curious what the reaction will be like when a biologist laments that a disease was cured too quickly, without giving us a chance to really mull it over
On whether AI still needs human mathematicians:

We need proof digestion, which is explaining it in terms that human beings can understand and appreciate. Right now, the best digestion is still coming from human experts. Is that where we make our last stand? Are we going to be the great interpreters of the things that the machines do? I suspect that will be our role for a little while longer, that we will have that special skill of translating, though I do expect that will be surpassed by machines soon enough, too.

It's a strange rearguard effort to try to salvage the incorrect, out-of-date argument that AI is just fancy autocomplete, by refusing to use words that more accurately describe what AI is doing. It's basically a demand we all engage in communal self-deception with them.

The new line all the anti-AI obsessives are adopting is that it's dangerous to "anthropomorphize" AI. What they mean by that is that if you use a colloquial term that accurately describes what they're doing - thinking, hacking, making autonomous decisions - they'll tell you to stop.
